Maybe he's having too much fun driving it to stop and tell us how it is!

Whatever.

I would be almost certain that warranty and TLC would be void. I guess Hartge/Birds would do there own warranty cover ?

Cheers

Warranty

Michaelk.

Yes Warranty will be void and yes Birds do there own warranty ; £400.00 aprox, for three years. So your getting 12-15 more bhp and £1300.00 in your bin, the choice is yours.

Hi rasp,

I made my choice some time ago I'd prefer to go down the BMW approved road especially as its JCW.

Although if this was not on offer I would deffinetly go with Hartge conversion route, over all the other tuner deals going.

It will be interesting to see how the cars compare

Cheers

Michael

Michaelk.

I originally was down for the JCW witch I think was everybodys favourite route to start off with but with more offers in the market I think people are being persuaded to move, some offers I think are going through to many hands before getting to the customer, to many slices of the cake thus making the price to high.

yes - I would've thought a warranty claim would be the tricky part. If it was anything like sorting out a problem on a pc you'd be going round in circles.

Hardware guy: "Its a software problem".
Software guy: "No, its definitely a hardware problem"

Having said all that I will still look into the Hartge conversion further.

Hi rasp,

There do seem to be more and more alternatives coming to light, some even claiming 250BHP ! The main reason I gone down the JCW route is, reputation, waranty and TLC intact, and as it will be viewed as part of the MINI range it will be easy to sell, not than I plan to for a good many years

Cheers

As alluring as the JCW conversion seems, one shouldn't forget that Hartge also has a great deal of tuning expertise in the BMW scene.

Dollar for dollar, the Hartge conversion makes far more sense with or without the warranty (to me anyhow).

Waiting for word from Hartge

I got an email from Herbert Hartge today. I live about an hour from their shop but am waiting to see if their kit will meet US standards. I'd hate to have a really fast Mini I could not bring back to the states with me.

The JCW kit includes an exhaust modification though (I believe only a silencer?). Hamann offer a silencer for euro 1,300 and euro 2,600 for silencer, header and cat. Hartge is also working on exhaust modifications, they quoted euro 800 - 1000 for a silencer excl. fitting. That closes the gap between Hartge and JCW

I'm sticking with Hartge though. Called the Dutch dealer last week, he's fitting the first kit in January and said I can have a test drive. If I like it he can do mine too

As for the reputation of Hartge. Hartge is after Alpina the best respected BMW tuner in Germany.

Rasp: remember to post your experiences with the Hartge kit, don't be like V12 and keep it all to your self. Some people out here are dying for a report

ITS DONE!

Hi all!

The conversion is done, firstly I would like to thank Birds staff for being so helpfull A really proffesional service they provide.
The car really is in a different league now, it pulls in 6th like it used to pull in 5th just dabbing the throttle keeps you moving, revving now to 7500rpm exceleration is much improved although still very smooth (no times as yet) Kompressor sound is much more prominent now, wineing sounds great at higher revs, all in all it really is a 1st class job early days I know but I for one am very very impressed with the whole package and do also think that others have got there work cut out to better it.

I said before that I have found the guys at Birds to be very professional and friendly. I took my 7 series to them rather than a BMW main dealer even though the prices were about the same.

And of course Hartge is not some back street tuning house -its right up close to the top of the premier league.

Good luck with your 'new' car Rasp. Would like to be kept up to date as I intend to look into Hartge again when my S comes in about 8 weeks time.

they're in an industrial estate just by a hump-backed bridge. Would suggest coming of the M40 at Uxbridge junction and then heading towards Iver Heath. I'm sure you'll have lots of fun and will be impressed by their 'more regular' fayre i.e BMW's.

But what does that warranty cover?

My understanding was that doing any sort of modification to the engine voided the warranty on the *whole* car not just the engine.

What's the official line?

I'm very tempted to go the hartge route as I feel JCW are asking too much money for theirs. However, they do have the added advantage of it being *fully* covered by the BMW warranty and it also *supposedly* doesn't void TLC.

I do believe the John Cooper Works S conversion kit IS the only one that would keep the TLC in tact the reason for this is that the MINI dealerships are also going to be fitting these.
