| MINI2 Newbie | Axle Information on the Cooper S I'm from the Neons.org Forums for Dodge Neons. We have recently been thinking about trying to add the Getrag 6 speed you guys have in the Cooper S to our neons. Here's what we know, the Cooper's engine was a joint BMW/Daimler Chrysler project. We are now under the impression that the bell housing pattern is different to bolt the tranny to the engine than our 2.0 (which is the same block as the SRT4 neon, Pt Cruiser and stratuses like the engine I put into mine). Can anybody confirm or deny this. Also, I would like to know what your axles are like and if anybody knows if they're the same as a Neon's. The mini is only 1 inch less wide than the SRT4 (I'm using this because all neon manual transmissions can be put into any year). Our axles are 3 pieces, the inner CV joint that goes into the transmission, it has a deep socket that the middle shaft slides in there, that's what holds it in place. Also, the outside cv is like this. The reason I ask is because`they have some leadway with them, I could push the hub out another 2.5 inches if I had to and use the same axle. So the reason I ask, is if yours are the same design we could use your inner cv at the transmission with our middle and outer cv. One last thing concerns me though, I know this is a lot to ask and I don't even know if you guys are at the stage of aftermarket older cars are. I know it just came out here, but I don't know about Europe. I'm hoping we can work together here to advance Sport Compacts as a whole. I kinda need to know the distane from the surface where the transmission bolts to the engine...to the place on the differential where the Passenger (in the US) axle goes in. Thank you guys for your help, and if you read this and know there isn't anybody on here who would know this please tell me. And... one last question when you look into the engine bay, is the transmission to the right of the engine or the other way around and is the intake manifold towards the front or rear of the car. Thank you |

| MINI2 Master | I thought I'd wait for someone more knowledgable to chime in with the answers to the hard questions but since no one has answered the easy ones, here goes... The intake manifold is at the front and the exhaust manifold is at the back. The engine is on the right side of the car when viewed from the rear (passenger side in the USA) and the tranny is on the left side of the car when viewed from the rear (driver's side in USA). I have not a clue about the axles or distance from differential to tranny, sorry. Some parts suppliers that might be of interest: TKA (Tallent), BG - front axle carrier, (Längslenker) GKN Hardy Spicer, GB - drive shafts Other parts suppliers, http://www.mini2.com/forum/showthrea...&threadid=4457 Harry MINI Cooper Cabrio: now the car with go cart handling really feels like an open go cart! | MINI2 Regular | I have a friend that works at DCX. From what I remember him telling me,(And what I've read or otherwise found info on) the motor that is in the Mini is shared with the European only Neons which have the same 1.6L displacement. The 2.0L US motor is completely different, so you can't just bolt it on and then sort out the axle issues. I'll ask my friend to clarify what the issues might be and post here when I get an answer. | MINI2 Newbie | Yeah I figured as much...the only thing that gets me is Chrysler has a long history of it's models being very similar. For example I believe all chrysler 4 cylinders and even the 6 cylinders share the same bell housing pattern. The older generation's axles will fit the newer cars no problem and etc. So I just find it strange that they changed the pattern on the export motor. Although I am not suprised the mini has a different pattern so it can meet BMW specs. I'm actually suprised Daimler Chrysler even collaberated with BMW since we are owned by Mercedes who is pretty much BMW's arch rival. Neways, thanks for the help guys I appreciate it much |

Offline | The joint BMW/Chrysler venture to build engines in Brazil had already begun when Mercedes acquired Chrysler. No doubt it displeased a few German managers as they looked over Chrysler's assets. + 2002 MINI Cooper S - Dark Silver / White roof, Sport, Premium, Lapis blue leather + 1965 Mini Traveller - Tartan Red / White roof, 1275, Cooper S discs, fully restored/renewed |

| MINI2 Master | Which German managers were displeased, Mercedes or BMW or both? If you look for Neon and PT Cruiser ads for other countries they all tout the fact that it has a BMW engine used in the new MINI, much to BMW/MINI's dismay! Offline | From what I've heard, the engine was designed by Chysler (pre-merger), but under guidance of BMW engineers. After the merger, it would be interesting to hear the comments from Mercedes and BMW managers when they discovered they were working together. Not quite a shotgun wedding ... more like finding out your fiance's family lives in a trailer park. Chip H. ex-MINI Cooper S owner and all around good-guy |
