Offline | You are not alone. A few others have expressed the same. Right or wrong, it appears to be not uncommon... With that said, if it is driving you crazy, maybe what you are hearing is different. If you haven't already done so, ask the guys at the shop where you had the work done. Good luck. Offline | Are you sure that the spacing/shimming of the ring & pinnion gear is correct? If that is off it will be noisey. Did the installer use "Plastic-gauge" to check the mesh of the ring & pinnion? Motor on, Dudes and Dudettes!!! '06 MCS SB/S '02 MCS DS/W (retired) |

Offline | Any recommended installers in the North East (US)?? I'm doing some more autoXing this year and this seems like a mod that will pay off. It also will help with next winter's driving. I live in the RI area. Driving down to Pennsilvania would not be a problem. |

Offline | In the past I've heard of some quality inconsistencies and some people ending up with a noisy unit (on RX-7s). How are all the existing MCS/Quaife users doing in this regard? I'm willing to have it done but don't want a noisy diff. |

Offline | Quaife Fitment I had the Quaife fitted to my car here in the UK in June '04 (I live in the same town as the Quaife factory so I bought it direct) and NO MACHINING was required - it went straight in. No noise, no vibration - no problems! I bought my Quaife in December '03, so it may be a little different to some of the earlier versions - I don't know. It may be that the earlier versions of the Quaife were identical to that used in the Focus RS and that later Quaife made some changes for the Mini because of the fitment problems. It's interesting to note that the Quaife part numbers for the Mini & the Focus are the same except that the Mini version has an "M" suffix - QDF38Z1 vs QDF38Z1M. There's no doubt that it's an expensive and time consuming job. I'd bet on 20 - 24 hours labour to remove the engine, transmission, install the diff (you might as well do the flywheel while you're in there!) and get the whole kit & caboodle together again. May be a mechanic with a lot of mini engine removal experience would be quicker, but my guys hadn't done one before and being used to working on racing Aston Martins and other '60's stuff, they found things fairly fiddly! |

Offline | Whoa (20 hrs)? Shop I used to work for charged a standard rate of 13 hrs for the Quaiffe install and usually had it done sooner. If your doing it yourself, then yes 20+ hrs would be appropriate. Mark -'04 Cooper S MC40 |

Offline | Quaife Install Time You guys in the States have to realise that we're having to contend with the British tradesman's work ethic here. What is a 20 hour job in the UK is probably a 12 hour job Stateside. By the time our mechanics have made a cup of tea, realised some parts are missing, told no one about it, figured out that they have the wrong tools, chatted to their co-worker about the football, had another cup of tea, told their boss some parts are missing, had another cup of tea, whinged about the weather etc... get the picture! I'm a Kiwi who's been living here many years, but I have never found a mechanic like those back home - guys with a "can do" attitude. Guys who can improvise, fabricate and manufacture parts in their workshop in no time flat! This all comes from New Zealand's remoteness and the need to make parts to avoid the long delays and high prices of imported parts.Everytime I get a car back from mechanics here it is late, over budget and the work of a poor standard. When questioned the mechanics open their big book of excuses - it is truly unbelieveable! My Mini has been off the road for five months due to the incompetence of the guys working on it! And that's two differnet shops - so it's not just an isolated problem! Don't get me going on franchised dealers - they're just fitters! Bottom line - 12-16 man hours is probably nearer the mark. |

| MINI2 Senior | The above is sooo true penguinracer. I LOVED the high standards of workmanship and overt enthusiasm of people in America when I lived there a few years back. This is one of the reasons why I shall be returning to the states again in about 2 years time ![]() Henry (British born and bred before anyone asks) |

Offline | I took an 8 day vacation in January of 1995! That was my last vacation. Since then, I have worked 6 days a week (sometimes 7). The last time I took even two days off in a row was October 11-12, 2002. My son was born on Oct.11. I'm freakin' exhausted. ![]() |
