Quaife install thread

Just putting some more info out in a seperate thread as the other one is getting very long.

My Quaife is now in and I was there for the entire assembly and most of the disassembly so I can speak with a little more knowledge now.

Some of this is mentioned elsewhere.

BMW synthetic oil for diff. $40 a qt. 2.5 qts. needed.
From a post on MCO, It was reported that their BMW dealer said the gear oil they were using is Texaco MTF 94 $15 L. and 2 L. needed another person said they, not the dealer, used 2 qts. of Red Line MTL and this is what Red Line told me also and that they had sampled the oil from a MINI. (Actually it used a little less than 2 quarts but get 2.)

BMW reuses the oil for warranty work!

No internal specs available from BMW as the factory diffs are replaced as a whole.

No bearing part numbers available, see above, 2 needed.

Ford SVT 6 speed bearing numbers listed elsewhere didn't prove correct here in Virginia but my mechanic/codriver was able to come up with the correct parts, now on order. I think he said $20 each but I'm not sure, they seemed cheap anyway.

Edit, part # F7RZ4221AC apx. $18 ea.
Merry Christmas

IMPORTANT!!! The Ford Bearings DID NOT fit my MCS! The bearings fit the Quaife but not the Diff. case. The stock bearings had a part number on them though and NAPA had them in stock, they fit the Quaife and the case. Part # LM501349 apx. $17 each.

Trained BMW mechanic said it took 12 hours too replace the stock diff. but paid 6 hours as warranty work. (It took about 12 hours, with two people working on it a few of those 12, to get in.)

I will post SVT bearing part numbers here, hopefully in the next few days. (did not fit my MCS)
You may be able to reuse the bearings off your diff. but I'd consider that an emergency last resort. (one of the bearings looks like it would be very hard to remove without damaging the bearing.)

From a later post in this thread, Two BMW axel seals are needed.
Part #'s are 231 175 186 38 and 231 175 186 47. apx. $14 each.
Thanks, dypayne1 !

(We did not need these seals even though I got some)

Later in this thread there is a clearance issue mentioned, I have personally confirmed this with my own eyes. The Quaife will not turn freely without hitting the inside of the case unless some material is removed from the offending area(s). Think of looking down in an ice creme cone that has part of one side pushed in, that is the area that needs to be addressed, apx. 2"-3" lenght by apx. 1/2" high area needs to be removed, maybe 2 mm off the high spot. It was decided, after having spoken with Helix13 about this before my install and after theirs, that it would be a good idea to flush the case out after the material was removed. Every thing was covered as much as possible during the removal of the material, then cleaned with brake cleaner, then installed on the car with the original oil put back in, after having been saved in a clean drain container, then the car was run for several minutes while on the lift and in all the gears, then the original BMW gear oil was draind and Red Line MTL installed.

Driving impressions later, as I have a test and tune and an autocross next weekend.

Quaife Install details

gowest:

Thanks for the info. My Quaife arrived today. I've been unable to find out all the details needed for the install as yet. I will probably have a transmission shop do the work.

You said your mechanic/co-driver came up with the correct bearing parts? Can you share that info please.

thanks
David

I will try to get the part numbers for the bearings in the next few days and post it as an edit to the top of this thread, then bump the thread up to the top. Any additional info I come up with I will post in the same manner and by the same token I will edit to the top any info others post later in this this thread or other threads, if it's not contray to something I know.

UPS missplaced my bearings, so they did not get to the Ford dealer last Tuesday, which seems to be the only day they get parts on a regular basis ay that Ford dealer. Hopefully they got there today as the plan is to do the install this weekend, if they did. Seems like several others have Quaifes as well, maybe one of them got theirs in already.

For those who already got the quaife, please post update if you blew a gear or if you've got excellent results.

LSD in

The Quaife is in and running on JLM's car (along with a lightened flywheel). Everything went smoothly except that a little machining must be done to the tranny case to fit the diff. If the machining isn't done, the tranny locks. Driving impressions to follow.

Helix13 - my transmission shop reported doing the same machining to get the diff to fit correctly in the case.
