Poor combustion caused by rapid throttle closing results in relatively higher emissions of unburned hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide. Even in modern fuel injected engines that are able to quickly reduce fuel flow there is a spike in these emissions. The car runs a little cleaner if revs reduce more slowly, even though it might burn a little more fuel. I hate the way it affects driveability.
