Got My AMD Conversion Today!

Dear All,

Well its a big thank you to all at AMD and Simon at Minispares!

Got my AMD conversion today - smaller pulley and ECU remap!

Interesting points to note....

Std Cooper S was producing 178bhp with Diag Software V33.2
200BHP conversion actually produces 222bhp on my car! VERY HAPPY BUNNY!

And it drives like a dream, smoother, faster, more econmical (assume you dont boot it all the time) and it sounds great!

For those wanting to know the technical stuff here are the dyno plots:

BHP Before/After

Torque Before/After

So thanks to everyone - best mod i have ever done to my car!

Cheers

W

Ps. and to top my day off, i got home to find that my friend had sent me a DIVX copy of the Italian Job (new version) which I have just watched and its bloody great! God bless the internet.... ohh and i do not agree with piracy.

I'm dubious of the initial readings, the S tends to be pretty close to 165 as standard (where as the one tends to be about 100, the Cooper 123), but it's the gain that's important, and that's impressive.

Yeah i was surprised at the initial readings too but the I am confident that is something to do with diag V33.2 software which was installed the week previous.

Most people have commented that they think they MCS is a bit lively post the software install and I must admit i felt that too. But now its very lively!

The chaps at AMD did point out though that they have never found a MCS that reads less than 165bhp as a standard car, most are high 160's. He said that he had chatted to a few other people with rollers who said they had got very much the same sort of readings too.

Maybe MINI are just being conservative!

Anyway, the days of having 160-170bhp are gone now..... I feel like i did on the day i first got my car, all be it nearly 12 months ago, it really has given it a new lease of life.

They are, but more so with the Cooper and One than with the S it would seem.

The search function is a great tool!

Try searching for issues about the surging problem on MCS

Dyno

Hi

this sounds great for a conversion but on the last Dyno day AMD said there Cooper S was pushing 240 on there dyno machine and only showed 189 on the BHP dyno machine so are there figures a bit optimistic only an enquire i am no way having a dig at the conversion.

Cheers

here comes the big Dyno debate. Is the BHP your showing Wheel BHP or Engine BHP. it makes a diff. also the factors such as weight and wheel size will make diff. on dynos. Just for argument sake lets say the 189 is Wheel bhp. taking in the standard factor of 12% loss for drive train. that alone would put it to 212 hp. now factor in wheel weight and size of a standard 17" slites with runflats VS lightwight wheels and tires (no this is not figured in drive train loss). puts it to about 225 hp. then you have temp and sea lvl to factor in. depending on those you may have up to 10 hp diff. there for that 189 could translate into about 235 flywheel hp. and of course for bragging right you always round up to the highest 0.. making the claim the 240.

For the wheel figure. im using what the diff was on two dyno runs i had for my civic. one run 17" rims and tires hp was 193 and switched to lightweight 14" rims (the spare tires) and it read 210 a 17hp diff.

Have fun, Be safe and Keep Motov8n

Mugami, "Wheel bhp"?...isn't that a contradiction in terms?

Whatever.

mmm interesting, although i have no reason to doubt them

Even if they are optomistic on the figures, hence why the original was just over 170bhp it would still make it over 210bhp which isnt bad.

Regardless of the figures though i have driven it work and back for the first time today and my my my... going to work has never been so much fun!

Had 2 people drive it from work today, who drove it on Monday (pre conversion), and were amazed at the difference.

My only gripe is that it is soooo easy to get the transaction control to kick in now and then the computer spoils the fun!.... thank god you can turn it off!

might be grinder.. BHP is Brake Horse Power so i thought and can be measured at any rotating spot. whether its at the wheel itself, flywheel or even at an axle. This was my understanding of BHP but i can be wrong. I have been in the past and most likely will be in the future.

All very interesting reading, maybe this summary sheet from the Dyno machine might help.....

As you can see nearly 47bhp is lost through the drive train and i reckon 15bhp of that is down to the run flats

Any thoughts?

Hey woodman

Just out of interest, was this the same rolling road that measured 263 on AMDs car but actually only produced 189 at the rolling road day ??

Whoa. OK. What I see there is a measured 170 whp. I then see an correction based on 27.7% drivetrain loss. Does that seem incredibly high to anyone else here? From there I see an additional correction, which I can only guess is SAE to DIN.

I am feeling that these corrections are going way overboard. The 170 whp is the only real figure youve got here, and while its quite good, I dont believe it puts you too much in front of any other conversion.
I dont know the usual torque figures either, but what I do see here is that you've got a nice strong 190 lbft (Im guessing from the poor scan quality) which is the only value the dyno actually measures.

Compare these two numbers with everyone else to see where you really stand.
