Thumbs up chipping the cooper

[font=Comic Sans MS]
just had my cooper chipped with a superchips upgrade. it's fantastic. the car is smoother to drive, throttle reponse is excellent, it picks up speed more quickly and the fuel economy has improve by at least 3 mpg's. i wish i'd done it sooner!!!!! if you do anything to your cooper i recommend using this superchips. feels like a new car!, anyone else think the same?

Welcome to MINI2. I'd just like to remind you to read the announcement on commerical advertising http://www.mini2.com/forum/

If you are just a satisfied customer, I'm sure people would appreciate it if you gave some more specific information, like dyno runs, and how your plans to deal with your dealer for TLC.

Also, you'll get more responses using correct English, capital I's and only one ! per post sentance.

Magic 8-ball was correct. All be in awe of Magic 8 ball.

I only have chipping experience with my VW jetta 1.8t...gone 74,000Km of which about 62,000 was chipped.. Been through 3 difference chips always looking for a smoother and smoother product. It's pretty scary and daunting the first time...hahahaha, but afterwards you do wonder why didn't chip sooner. There is more power, not necessarily smoother, fuel usually suffers a bit...the first chip I had the mileage didn't drop much at all....I wondered if the car was running LEAN for the amount of power it was producing....

It's probably a harder choice with a normally aspirated engine like the Cooper. Gains are most likely no where as close to the 1.8T for the VW. I dyno'd along with the 20+ other guys in our club in the 190's to low 200's hp and 200-250lb-ft torque (up from 150hp/155lb-ft). Other mods like turbo back exhausts, intakes, 4 bar fuel rails, upgraded diverter valves, turbo inlet, etc....are still recommended but the car is reliable with OUT these.

I'm not technically qualified to comment on chipping cooper or cooper S's but from the looks of the chips offered on the S (especially the Works kit), heat is a biger issue that must be solved when you chip. It doesn't seem as simple as the 1.8T. I personally have got the CVT and there is no chip solution for this car. There will be no temptation on our part. Even with the manual, I doubt gains are more than 6-10hp tops. the Cooper S would a differenent story but again see observation about heat.

As for warantee...the two dealers I went to didn't CARE that I was chipped. They still serviced it. Helped that not much went wrong with the engine but to void the warantee you'll have to show excessive WEAR to parts and the dealer has to PROVE that the modification CAUSED the engine failure. They couldn't void your interior rattles cause you chipped the car. if they did, any lawyer's letter could win this case. Basically don't be an idiot to your service manager, realize that chipping does risk excess wear to your car...be prepared to pay if you do tune your car without planning out the process...

there are 100's of stories of chipped cars for VW and rarely do you get problems with the car or dealers. Only idiots who chip their cars, ie use a manual boost controller to crank out MORE boost....will you fry your turbo.

thanks vwmini. glad someone took my sentiments in way they were posted. first and foremost, i do not work for superchips. i am an interior designer in devon. secondly i do not need lessons in english from an american, and thirdly i know that modifying my car effectively voids my warrenty, but i'm happy to take that risk.
it just so happens i am extremely plesed with my mini, more so now it has been chipped. i have 18 months left on the warrenty and superchips offer a 12 month warrenty from the time the car is upgraded. as i said in my previous post, the car is much smoother, more economical and more fun to drive. the dealer knows i have chipped my car and is fine about it, they will honour my tlc package. SGRAY, you will find a fitter for what you want on the website for the company. obviously i'm not supposed to advertise them too heavily!!!!!! oh, sorry too many exclamation marks. 6f7 - no offence taken, but i thought i'd start somewhere, so 1 post it is so far. however, judging by most people's reactions, i'm not really welcome on here anyway. you all really know how to make someone welcome don't you!

just to add to my previous note. moderator, if you wish to delete all this, then do so; if i have broken any rule, i apologise. but the reaction so far to what was an innocent post, with the odd exception, has proved a point to me. why did i bother to be interested in what others thought.

You're most certainly welcome, but your first post was much different from what people here expect. Usually someone's first post is asking what kind of options they should buy, or pictures of the car they just got.

Instead you commented on a rather sensative issue, that you didn't even know was sensative, so it brought up some emotions. I wasn't trying to correct your English, merely trying to explain why you didn't get the reaction you may have expected, you didn't break any rules, so I have no reason to delete your post.

In fact, upon further reading Its actually quite interesting superchips gives a 12 month warranty, as many cars reach ages similar to yours, there's a very good possibility more people will go the same route as you. Generally most people are worried about warranty issues here, or just go all out and spend several thousand on an upgrade and take the risks. You're somewhat in the middle which is rare.

Try some of the other forums, you may find some more information on other topics, but please don't feel like you're not wanted, that wasn't the intent.

Magic 8-ball was correct. All be in awe of Magic 8 ball.

That drives a cooper a lot like mine

He had it chipped by Superchips and was only mildly happy with the results.

He says it would be worth it if it was less that £100.
Fuel econ is about the same, but it pulls cleanly from lower down the rev range now.
Top end is unaffected.

Tip, save your pennies and buy an S (I know he will!)

Spelling is very bad on this site, everyone is very keen to type in their posts so quickly, or they could just be ignorant and you do have to watch out for the aficianados (sp ?)

The John Cooper Works kit seems to do the trick, but it's pricey.

lol, yea that should work for the price. I see that as more of a mortgage than a mod though. I'm not interested in moding at all but I was just curious because most moding threads have people saying they noticed no difference, so why bother ?

I reckon the best thing is a Self Contained Take Off Assist Sytem. I think Fokker still make one!
