Hot Brakes - Cracked Pads

Just a quick note to all track heads, who as I do myself, pit the mini against all wannabees on the track. Recently I replaced my brake pads all round with EBC Green Stuff pads, partly for grip and partly for a dust free existance. I must say however that I had no complaints to date of the stopping power of the OEM pads.
As I still had probably 75% pad left on the originals, I got the old pads back from the mechanic.
All 4 of the front pads had cracked substantially from heat.
I don't know if potentially they can fall apart after heavy cracking, but it is probably something all track users should check.
As I haven't had the new pads on all that long, so I can't really report as to performance, but I know these pads (and moreso others in the range) have very good heat resistance.
So if you're a track lover like me, its probably worth checking your pads.
Merry Christmas to all.

Although I only had about 50% left on the pads, and replaced them with Greenstuffs (read review I submitted elsewhere on the EBC at the track) I've already worn the EBC's to 50% as well, and I have a whopping 13,000 miles on the car, and warped the rotors a bit... I'm thinking I need the Reds or another harder pad, and perhaps bigger rotors

Hi,

Same story with mine. I took the front pads off when I only had 2000km on the car, and one track day, and they were cracked.

Apparrently the backing plate in the pads is not very stiff, and is not braced, so under heat it flexes, causing the surface of the pads to crack.

I asked the BMW service manager about this, and apprarrently it is common even in cars that have not been tracked. However, he seemed to think that is was a cosmetic issue, and shouldn't affect performance or safety.

I now have dedicated track pads (galfer). These are great for the track, but hopeless of the street. I am on the third set of fronts, and none have cracked yet.

You'd think that the material seperating from the backing would be bad news?? Surely they wouldn't knock off correctly??

Same story here. I took my stock pads out after one trackday and 1200 miles. All four were cracked. Replaced with Ferodo 2500's. After 6 trackdays and another 7,000 miles, I still have pad left. Oh, I also swapped out rotors at the same time. Went to Powerslot. They are in great shape.

Maybe, I need to go faster and brake harder and later.

The EBC green can be real hard on rotors. In general OEM rotors do not like them. They are especially bad on VW/Audi rotors. (Pass experience) I currently run EBC green pads and rotors on the MCS, they are quite good. (if a little nosiey on general road). The Red needs time to warm up. Not a good pads for general use.
I have driven a MCS with the Brembo kit. Its great. No fade on track. Also great for the road. Consider the Kit if the budget allows. Its about $2600AUD. Comes with lines, calliper, pads and rotors. Plus, you can chose the colour of the calliper.
