Upgraded brakes?? APs?

Has anyone upgraded their brakes on their Mini? If so which did you go for? I'm thinking about putting APs on my S Works - has anyone else done this?

Thanks all!

JCW release their brakes this month for around £800.

It might be worth waiting for these first!

Perfect - just what I wanted to know. Are they the challenge brakes do you know?

Is it really £800 for 4?? Sounds incredibly reasonable so am sceptical!

Thanks a million.

I have the Brembo Gran Turismo's on mine. Absolutely amazing brake power. 4-pot callipers and 328 mm slotted 2-piece rotors. Just fronts. I expect that the JCW brake kit will only be an upgrade of the front brakes, cause normally 70% of braking power comes form the front brakes.

Any more details on this? nothing on their website that I could find
BTW:
I saw something interesting on one of the 'tuner' TV shows last night. they proved on the dino that any time you increase the diameter of your brake roters you loose Hp at the wheel about 10 to 15 hp going up 1.5 inches even if the new roters are a pound lighter than the orignal

makes sense 'cos the mass is further from the centre of the axle

You're looking at about $2000, but that's in the US...I'm not sure what the prices are like in the UK...maybe you could motor down to Italia and see their prices?

This guy put the APs on
http://www.mini2.com/forum/attachmen...entid=33017%20

and the Brembos look like this

I am all for slots on discs to deal with vapor dispersal but drilling makes me very nervous as I have heard so many horror stories over the years about them and fatigue cracking and failure.

I expect That at some point I will do the brake discs (before I do any engine mods I will for sure as improving the stopping before improving the going is my way of doing it)

I am even thinking of going to green stuff pads right from the start but others have told me to just put on pads like that if you are going to the track as they are only about 75% as good as stock on cold brakes which after all is what you have in a lot of daly driving.

BUT I have the 17" wheels in white and while I do not mind wipeing them off every day or two and washing them weekly when I wash the car I have heard the green stuff pads are a lot better in the dust dept.

So just how much do you give up in daly driving with them is cold stopping realy 25% less than stock?

Looking ahead to perhaps a year when I will be more into mod mood when it comes to full brake mods which disc/ caliper/pad combo is best for a car that will be a daly driver with perhaps a few track days a year? I realy do not want to increase disc diameter either and drilling is out as I said above.

don't discount drilled discs- just be careful with them. They're a ltot quieter than slots and, if done properly, not a problem.
I have heard from numerous modifiers that AP are masters of the art of drilled discs, Porsche use drilled discs as do Audi RS and BMW where they don't use slots. I think that that is true of all standard very high-performance cars

Thanks I was not aware of the sound issues. are slots really that much louder than drilled as much as drilled are to plain? As to drilled also thanks are there other MINI drilled disc makers beside AP that you recomend?

the whole point of getting a brake upgrade seems silly to me when most kits are for 17" wheels or more, and you can buy a nice set of lightweight 15" wheels and light tires, and increase your torque and decrease your breaking distances dramatically. then u could get a small kit maybe to help cooling...

Has any one done quantified Brake tests 60 to 0, 100 to 0, fade, cold stops etc with the different pads and also with the more expensive upgrade kits of discs and multi piston calipers?

sounds like a task for GoMINI magazine if not... I dont expect the web sites would have the resources and vendor tests and claims would of course be suspect

I thought about conducting a test like you said, but what tool should be used to measure brake distance? One major problem is that different vehicles have different weights and uses different tyres. It's hard to find a bunch of owners using exactly the same tyres but different brakes.

We used the Alta Big Brake conversion for the fronts and have added their drilled rears. The big test will be at Eastern Creek Raceway today.

I've added the Stoptechs recently. I've only been out on the track with their street pads (Axxis Ultimates), they were OK, but not a dramatic improvement over stock brakes with Ferodo 2500's all around. I have since put Hawk Blues on the front and can already tell they will perform to a much higher level.
