another exhaust thread

Ok, after much discussion with my BMW dealership They have told me that an aftermarket exhaust system will completely invalidate my warrenty for the whole engine!!

I cannot believe this is the case and although posts about this have existed before i believe situations have changed.

Can anyone with an aftermarket exhaust or thinking about it give me the latest info on their warrenty situation.

Cheers

Watch to see what Dinan does...rummor has it that their products won't invalidate the warrenty. Also check w/ your local dealership and see if they are selling any aftermarket bits, as if they are they might allow it w/o invalidating the warrenty aslong as you use them for service(ie another dealership that doesn't sell these products won't service your car under warrenty)

This sounds pretty serious and quite scary for those who've already fitted one - I really want a pro exhaust but theres no way i'm invalidating my warranty for one - if any one gets clarification of the situation let us know, thanks

Hi,

This is an email i received from Autofasion a while back about this subject:

-------------------------------------------------
Stephen,

My understanding of European Law, and a conversation with BMW HQ by
telephone has indicated that fitting of aftermarket parts will invalidate
the waranty on that part alone. i.e. if you fit an exhaust then they will
not waranty the original exhaust, and that they are not allowed to
invalidate any other parts of the waranty.

We are currently awaiting a written response from BMW on the subject. This
limited invalidation is only fair to BMW and to the customer. Further
details will be posted on the website once we have them.

Phil.

Hope this helps!!

I heard it invalidated it because there was an oxygen sensor in the exhaust system or something!?

Don't know if this is dealer Bull Sh*t or not.

This sounds pretty crappy. Performance parts notwithstanding, think of this for a minute. If someone had a nice new One or Cooper, and drove it in the City, short trips, and blew through their muffler in 3 years, and got a non-performance aftermarket muffler fitted, this blows the remaining year on the engine's warranty?

In North America at least, Muffler shops are big business, and rarely fit OEM parts, but rather house-brand mufflers that meet or exceed those OEM specifications. I've never heard of this voiding an existing powertrain warranty.

This seems grossly unfair.

P.S. How long would the stock OEM exhaust on a One, Cooper or S last? Any guesses? Is the S's all stainless steel?
