United-States Your MCS exhaust reference thread. Pictures. Videos. Sounds. Et cetera.

Here available is pics and clips of most major exhausts for the MCS
that i have been able to acquire over the last couple of months. I didn't
get every exhaust system, but most of the major ones. The video/audio
files are all Right-Click Save-Target-As style... the video files are all different
types... wmv, quicktime, mpeg... If you see something here incorrect, please
tell me so i may fix it. I obtained my information from various vendors and
websites.

Thanks to Randy Webb, OutMotoring, & other mini owners for the pictures
Thanks to many mini owners for taking the time to record the video/audio clips!

1. Milltek

Price: $795
Composes: double-sided 3-piece quick-fit system.
Power gains: around 9 horsepower and between 7-9 lb/ft torque
Piping diameter: 2.5"
Weight: 31 lbs.
All stainless, provides greatest gains in hp & torque of any system available as of March 2004. Almost as quiet as stock system but lower tone. As of March 2004, fitment problems on 2004 Cooper S's... exhaust hanger change. Milltek is currently working to correct this.

2. Alta Sporttone

Price: $650~$700
Composes: single-sided system, 2 pieces.
Power gains: around 8 horsepower, between 5-7 lb/ft torque
Piping diameter: 2.5"
Weight: 22 lbs.
All stainless, recent concerns with fitment problems. Also reported discoloration of tips due to flow problems. Alta has claimed to have fixed this. Tips now come pre-treated gold and fitment is purportedly no longer a problem.

3. UUC

Price: $875
Composes: dual-sided system, 4 pieces.
Power gains: around 6-7 hp and 7-8 lb/ft torque
Piping diameter: 2.25"
Weight: 34 lbs.
All stainless, said to be one of the most beautiful systems on the market. Noise is not as loud as the magnaflow, but not much quieter. Definitely runs up there with the loudest systems.

4. Playmini / Scorpion

(exhaust is the same rebadged for UK/US)
Price: $550 (US version)
Composes: dual-sided system, 3 pieces.
Power gains: unknown
Piping diameter: unknown
Weight: 32 lbs.
Not much is known about this system, and there is a debate as to the design. After the Y, the piping diverts the opposite direction for the flowing gasses. No dynos have yet been published for this system as of March 2004. System seems to be very popular in the UK.

5. Magnaflow

Price: $550~$600
Composes: dual-sided system, one piece?
Power Gains: between 8-10 hp, torque unknown
Piping Diameter: 2.5"
Weight: 34 lbs.
All stainless, loudest of known exhausts

6. Borla Street & Borla Sport

Price: $650~$700
Composes: dual-sided system, 6 pieces.
Power Gains: (Borla claims) 5 hp, 8lb/ft torque (Borla Sport: 9 hp, 8 lb/ft torque)
Piping Diameter: 2.25"
Weight: 34 lbs.
All stainless, the Borla system is closest to stock sound. The Borla Sport system is as loud as if not louder than the Magnaflow.

7. Quicksilver

Price: $750~$850
Composes: single-sided system,
Power gains: around 7-8 hp, torque unknown
Piping Diameter: 2.25"
System weight: 20 lbs.
All stainless, single or dual tip designs available. Seems to be the most popular of the single-sided systems.

Quicksilver Videos

8. SuperSprint

Price: $1200~$1500
Composes: dual-sided, 4 pieces (if you keep your straight pipe, or 5 without)
Power gains: unknown (one dyno run shows 19 hp with header and cat)
Piping diameter: unknown
Weight: unknown
All stainless, this system offers a stunning array of configuration options. 5 different tips styles are available (Viper, DTM, dual-round, dual-rectangular, and Promini-RS). Mufflers are at an angle - not straight-facing. System is by far the most expensive available.

Supersprint Fly By

9. One-Ball

Price: $50~$275 (50 bucks at your local muffler shop to Helix's professional & recommended mandrel-bent replacement system.)
Composes: one-sided, two-piece system
Power Gain: 2~3hp, 1 lb/ft torque
Piping diameter: same as stock
Weight: ~25 lbs.
Stock exhaust system minus a muffler. Slightly louder than stock, but serious weight savings are a plus. Very popular with the track racers and autocrossers. Not big on power, but big on budget!
(thanks to Andy for some pics).

One-Ball Videos
no videos at this time.

10. B&B Tri-Flo

Price: $900~$1100
Composes: dual-sided system, 3 pieces
Power gains: unknown
Piping Diameter: unknown
Weight: unknown
All stainless, this system is available in 3 tip designs: DTM, dual-round, or single 5.25" oval. Not much else is known about this exhaust, and not many people (if any at all) ever post any information or user feedback about this exhaust.

B&B Triflo Clips:
B&B Mini Cooper S on dragstrip mp3

11. NRP

Price: $650~$700
Composes: single-sided system, 2 pieces
Power gains: 7 hp, torque unknown
Piping diameter: 2.5"
Weight: 22 lbs.
All stainless and similar to the quicksilver and alta, this item differs in only that it has less-finished tips (not as nice). And since it is a single-sided system, this means it is tough to hang. minor fitment issues.

NRP Video Clips
no clips at this time.

IF you have a video/sound clip that you don't see here, please don't hesitate to PM me for information on how to send it to me. If you see missing information (i.e. piping diameter, hp gains, etc.) and you know the answer and i don't have it, please PM me and let me know. Cheers.

More to come later...

I can see this being very helpful to prospective buyers! One thing that I didn't see is the size of the system. Some are 2.25", while others are 2.5 inch...

Thanks for the clips, will help with my decision for a new 'zorst in the near future. One question that I have is why do all sound clips (except stock system) sound as if there is extra 'detonation' as the car revs. None of them seem to rev clean and you hear small 'backfires'.

A friend of mine has the MCS Works and his does sound clean like the stock system, with no backfires.

phew... thanks for getting that up. I changed my mind after hearing the Milltek exhaust and I am going to go with the Alta instead.

I don't think that is detonation, as an exhaust obviously can't alter the combustion cycle of the engine. That sound you are referring to would most likely be the "burble", and is present on less-restrictive exhausts. This is a natural aural characteristic that is muffled by the stock system.

Cheers

That's not detonation, that's the car running pig rich and all the unburnt fuel in the exhaust path. My car does the same thing, albeit louder now with the supersprint exhaust. These cars are among the richest running out of the box I've ever seen, I had mine on the dyno and the air/fuel dropped below 10:1 (off the chart). There is much hp to be had by tuning with a piggyback fuel controller like an Apex'i Super AFC, we'll leave that to another thread though.

Good job.

I don't seem to be able to send my clips, everytime I try to e-mail them it crashes midway through. But one of them is of a car revving so it seems you have that covered now anyway.

That's the clip I had. The other one is from inside the car but that's the better one..

Sorted.

ok, just had some additions...

added Magnaflow clips, Borla clips, Quicksilver clip, and Supersprint clips.

i would still like to see that second milltek clip that everyone is talking about - that first one doesn't really give you the jist of it....

Cheers

First off, this topic should be a sticky one (*cough.. moderator get your butt into action*) since a lot of time was taken out to make it and it is VERY helpful in deciding which exhaust system to choose.

But anyway, let me get to my question... does anyone have a sound clip of Magnaflow INSIDE the car???

Does anyone have a sound clip of Alta being pushed a it harder than the clips that are up?
