I don't think it's Calli, because other DINAN 49 state legal modifications are still legal in california, or so I think.

The upgrades are not for 2004 models. Anybody know what the difference between the 02-03 and 04 that would require a different set of upgrades. And yes, SpyCar is right on. No California certification. (Which is a little weird when you consider that some NE states have copied CA emission requirements.)
I've been waiting for the Dinan upgrades, particularly since Dinan mimics the BMW warranty. However, MINIUSA apparently notified their dealers than any Dinan pieces which could be traced to a warranty repair would not be covered. They want to protect their JCW relationship.
I wonder what that means for current MINI/BMW dealers that are also Dinan dealers. If one has the work done by an independent (I.e. not dealer) installer does that mean that a MINI Dinan dealer won't honor the Dinan warranty?

Those dealers will be able to honor the Dinan warranty, they just won't get reimbursed by MINIUSA for doing the warranty work.

The exhaust hangers are different. Shouldn't be hard to correct though.
There's probably other stuff I don't know.

High Flow Cowl Induction System

I called Dinan today with questions I had regarding their intake:

How is air from the cowl area "ducted" into the air box?
Quote:
The partition between cowl area and engine bay is cut to match the opening at the back of the air box lid and the two are joined with a rubber seal.

Who makes the air filter?
Quote:
Sorry, that's proprietary information.

The FAQ on MCS air intakes has been updated to include the Dinan intake.

The filter is bright blue and looks like a cotton gauze type thing... Lets see who makes bright blue filters... Hrm.. Accel?

The only other similar filter manfacturers that I know of are K&N (red) and Fram's new Air Hog (can't remember color)

http://go.mrgasket.com/brands.aspx?BrandID=11

I could be wrong, but its not like you can go down the street and get a custom made air filter, its sorta the thing that only a few companies do.

Magic 8-ball was correct. All be in awe of Magic 8 ball.

I really like the Dinan intake, it's the first intake that seems to actually be engineered. The others will intake warm air, Dinan keeps and improves on the box. Large surface area on the filter. I just wish it was a little cheaper. I will still wait till the '05 JCW improvements are announced, in case I can get a warrenty-covered intake/for my jcw.

The lid is molded from a very specific composite material that is extremely effective as a heat insulator, ensuring that power-robbing under hood heat is kept at bay.

I think the CA smog legal thing is a bureaucratic problem, not an emissions one. If you do this whole Dinan thing to your car, I'd bet serious money it would pass any CA emissions testing center with flying colors. But the state, in its infinite wisdom and supreme red tape machine finds ways to make it very hard to get approval for anything that modifies a car engine.

Once I find employment as a Marketing Manager again in the Bay Area, I'll be buying the Dinan kit myself.

I have sold numerous Dinan packages (most at under retail, mind you) and all of my customers have reported being VERY happy with their results. The key to the Dinan pieces and installation there-of is to make sure you get the proper software. Yes, the airbox is plastic. I and others would like it to be carbon fiber; But you know what? It would be crazy expensive. The strut bar is going to help just as much as any of your other strut bars (unless you've scored an adjustable one.) The exhaust WILL work for 04's; with modification of the hangers. Ask your dealer first, though; I'm sure most will be willing to co-operate; however, no one likes surprises. The Throttle Bodys are VERY nice; almost pieces of art. I have two customers who are buying the TB's from me, and those pieces will be the finishing touches on their Dinan engine performance. Like I said, though, software is key. As far as pricing goes; Dinan prices their products for the Mini VERY reasonably. For what I have seen out there, allot of the aftermarket support for Mini (or any other aftermarket company for any other car, for that matter) has little to no development or testing. You'll see it in the higher performance car segments or in stuff like TRD, H.A.R.D., and Nismo; however, you'll be hard pressed to go into Autozone or even your local speed shop and find something that was tested or holds ANY warrenty! Any fool can go and bend and cut some pipes, stick a filter on it and call it a performance mod. Few though, can back their products with a warrenty and stand behind it 100 percent. Budget Pocket Rocket builders, look elsewhere. For those wanting a product that was CREATED for performance, Dinan is here. I am in no way discounting other companys credability in terms of their performance or warrenty or workmanship. I have see fine looking performance parts from other companys. What I am saying is that I have not found a better product than Dinan.

Happy Motoring;

I have installed the intake and the stage 2 software. I did the install myself, which was rightly described as cutting part of the cowling. It's plastic, so I used a light coping saw because I felt like it. Worked fine.

BTW, I have a 2004. Some of the upgrades have been offered on the 02-03's first and then on the 04, but right now I believe all of what they have is available for both. I know I can get the throttle body for my MCS if I want to.

Next up is the Alta 15%, but after that it's probably the throttle body.

I got a chance to hear the Dinan exhaust the other day. Many people I'm sure would love it. Sounds to me a little too loud for my taste, but I like my BMW motorcycle, if that explains where my preferences lie.

The guy that has the exhaust works in the dealer service dept, and has been installing each piece as it comes in. He's been a wonderful help, since he's not only experienced the package, but each component addition individually. He's waiting for a Dinan pulley, which is apparently in the works, but who knows when that will be out. He seemed to think later this year, but... They've been pretty slow to roll-out obviously.

Yes, you are correct. According to the Dinan Dealer newsletter, they are currently developing a pulley and larger intercooler. It will be interesting to see when that will be available. Parts have been slow in the making up to this point, but if they are designed as well as the current parts, it will be worth the wait!
