2002 Cooper S with the rubber engine mounts.

What are the characteristics of a knackered engine mount? How do you tell?

I just want to check I'm right and my dealer is wrong

Shtart your Engine, Open the bonnet, get someone to rev the engine (gently) and watch for signs of movement is a good way.
There will always be a little play, but no more than say a half inch maximum
