JCW panel filter change to K&N

Good evening, I just spent about an hour searching the site to try and find out how to get my JCW air box open without breaking anything in order to put in a K&N filter. I worked out the two screws in the front of the box and tried to move the box forward, but I'm afraid of breaking something. It's so tight in there and looks like there is more to remove from the box before it comes off. Just looking for a few suggestions.

I know the standard MCS box has 4 screws, one at each corner of the cover, is it not the same for the JCW air fitler box?

Is it the 210bhp air filter box that you are looking to put the K&N in? Interesting idea if it is, and look forward to hearing if there is any improvement to the JCW filter

The only problem I have is knowing which one to drive?

Hi Rakey, the JCW air box is different from the standard one. I can see the front two screws. but the rear ones are not accessable from what I can see. It's also electronicly controled to open to fresh are over 4500 rpm. and all that stuff is connected to the top of the airbox. I'm sure it's easier than it looks, but I'll wait for someone with the same JCW box to key in, Thanks for getting back to me..Gary

no worries Gary, never really looked at my JCW air box to figure out how to open it, just thought it would be the same

I would have a look at mine for you, but its in the UK, and I am not at the moment

Do you think there will a large gain by changing the actual filter in there? As I would have thought that the filter supplied would be a higher spec to a standard MCS?

The only problem I have is knowing which one to drive?

The filter in the JCW airbox isn't a panel, rather it's a cone similar to some of the aftermarket intakes.

Filter

Thanks Pamlico, Guess the panel filter wouldn't fit anyway. Maybe someday I'll figure out how to get the top of the box off. Never thought it would be a cone type. Nice idea though...Gary

Glad to help. Here are a few pictures and descriptions posted by Greatbear on NAM that you may find interesting (click thumbnails to enlarge):

The first shows the filter element box after it's been opened. The filter attaches to a bracket seen on the left of the image,

Next is the conical JCW filter compared to the stock flat panel filter:

Finally, this is what's inside the box. The canister is a vacuum reservoir which allows the air door to be opened using a vacuum diaphragm despite operation at wide open throttle (and therefore no available vacuum from the engine). The canister holds enough vacuum to keep the door open regardless of how long the engine is held wide open. The collar where the element attaches can be seen on the right side of the image.:

The replacement cost of the JCW element is on the order of $90. There have been mentions that some of the available aftermarket elements may fit, but I don't know if that's been determined yet.

I'd certainly be interested in a K&N replacement for the JCW filter. I had a K&N before the upgrade and I really liked it. The part number for the JCW filter is 13-72-0-395-826

So if anyone can figure out a match, please post, and BTW here's a related thread:

http://www.mini2.com/forum/engine-drivetrain-tuning/85930-mini-cooper-s-works-airfilter.html

P.S. I still have the K&N for a 2003 MCS with about 8-10K miles on it (cleaned and retreated 2x), so if anyone thinks it deserves a good home in their MINI, send me a PM. I just couldn't handle having the dealer just throw it out after the '05 210 upgrade, and its sitting in the basement just begging to be abused.

Early is on time; On time is late.

Just replaced my stock box with the JCW box. Both the stock MCS and the JCW box have two screws each, and after taking those out they are undone by pushing the upper lid towards the firewall and then up to unlatch the hooks.

I am hoping a reusable filter will be available by the time my element needs changing. On NAM it would appear there are vendors already working on it.

Sorry I hadn't seen this thread earlier, I took apart my JCW intake this weekend and posted pictures and photos here:
http://www.jwardell.com/mini/jcwintake.html

Yes, to remove the airbox, it must be slid backwards and then pull the rear up.
I hope alta or someone steps in and makes an alternative filter if MINI is going to charge that much for theirs.
