thing is ive been told that performance doesnt really different from panel filter to general induction kit, only noise, whereas if i take the enxt step to a viper or typhoon then it gets worth it, so if a general induction kit for my car costs say £70 and a panel £35 yet they both do the same for performance i am leaning towards the panel, anyone else got any hindsight on this?!

cheers guys

a cheap (£70) cone filter definately won't give you anything more than a replacement panel filter, exept more noise. what both of these will give is smoother acceleration & allow you to use the top end of the rev range more. a more expensive air induction kit like the viper might give you a couple more bhp but these are probably only worth fitting along with a more free-flowing after market exhaust - there's no point sucking more air into the engine if it can't be exhausted any quicker.

any more opions then? come on i know loads of you guys have one or the other!!!!

looking at panels at the mo, seems they differ on 05 facelift models due to the airbox being a diff. shape, as this is removed to fit a kit i pressume that any mini cooper induciton kit will fit or will it have to be unique to the 05 model also?

I have a pipercross viper and a drop in filter! At the mo im using the drop in filter!

The pipercross or any of the kits available with a cold air feed definately give some slight power gains over the cone style induction kits!
The stock air intake with aftermarket filter isnt bad tho as it still has a feed from the front of the engine!
Basically it boils down to how loud you want it to sound!
The Pipercross viper is significantly louder than stock!

the noise is definately down to personal preference. i have a magnex exhaust which on its own is nice & growly without being too noisy. when i put a cone filter on & removed the air box it was just way too loud - really boomy inside the car so i took it off & reverted back to the standard air box & put in a K&N panel filter. this gives the improvement in air intake but is only slightly louder than the standard filter

Thats exactly what i did but in my case i had a viper and added a play mini unsilenced! It was a bit too loud so i now have a drop in Piper filter!

so basically then, i get the same performance gains with a drop in filter as a standard induciton kit say a 57i but if i wa to get a CAI such as a viper that would be far better. so the only thing benefiting from the standard kit is noise comapred with a drop in filter.

Get yourself a BMC CDA, carbon CIA - make a fair bit of difference on take off and revs higher. Thumbs up from me!!
