Mine collects oil so I'm thinking it isn't a placebo.
I have to ask Stu, do you actually have one or tested one?
Just curious.

Same here.

I guess I'll keep Stu's opinion in mind the next time I'm dumping the sludge out of my OCC.

No but fellow MINI owners have and after looking at their results and lengthy discussion with my mechanic on what it is supposed to achieve and what the problem it is trying to solve, it wasnt really worth worrying about.

The catch can is just attempting to deal with oil 'blow-over'. This can only be an issue if you are overfull or have really pushed the car hard and some of the synthetic oils can foam up a bit due to the detergents in them. We solved that by using Mobil 1 Racing 4T which is bascially the same as the normal Mobil 1 oil but designed for motorbikes. No detergents due to wet clutches.

Setup properly catch cans can do something, but there are plenty of other issues and things to spend your money on first!

Be careful when installing an OCC, mine created massive vacuum problems more noticable when high tuning mods have been carried out...

Rasp, what do you mean by vacuum problems? Similar to turbo lag?

Something to do with a loss of crankcase vacuum preesure usually caused by the way the pipework hase been re-routed, a small leek would not make hardly any difference to a standard car but to a tuned car as you increase boost so the vacuum leek increases, now add around 100bhp to these cars and you could end up with a high vacuum problem like I did, so the Alta OCC had to come off..Other tuners have had this same problem and have held there sale of OCC's back and only recently a few have put them on the market. I will see if I can get a more technical explanation...

Crankcase pressure should always be positive.
Test.
Remove you oil filler cap while the car is running. You can feel the air blowing out of the crankcase. ( Hold a rag over the opening as it could be a bit messy)
A PCV valve opens under vacuum, generally supplied by intake manifold vacuum.
Some of the installations I've seen add several feet of hose and the volume of the can to the line involved in this. A small leak, too large a diameter hose or hose with too weak a wall can all cause a drop in effective vacuum at the PCV valve..
Boost in and of itself cannot cause a vacuum leak but an engine in a higher state of tune may deal with a vacuum leak less well than a stock motor..Very high performance motors usually pull less vacuum at idle due to valve overlap and so are more sensitive to any loss.

In short, don't make the runs too long and don't allow any leaks.

I do fail to see how you could have a high vacuum problem. I have actually never heard of that.
