Warrenty

Hi peps!

I was wondering if the following mods wil invalidate ur warrenty!?!?

Fitting 18" wheels
Tinting Windows
Lowering 30mm on springs
Adding the Aero kit spoiler by a non-dealer bodyshop
Geting the arches/sills sprayed by a non-dealer b/shop
Custom made back box
and, fitting a TV/DVD install.

Hope u can help me!

Honest answer is, it probably depends on your dealer (whether they are nice enough to turn a blind eye ).

Also I've heard it said that it won't invalidate the entire warrenty....just the warrenty on the parts you've changed. Which sounds reasonable to me

As usual I could be wrong!

I think the rule of thumb is that if you alter the performance or the design of a part, then that part and any systems related to it are voided. Tiniting windows would possibly void a window warranty, but not the engine. TV/DVD would probably void the electrical but not the suspension.

Yoda.

And do, pray tell, explain what your plans are for a black box. I'm VERY curious.

IB/IB Cooper, Black Leather, every option except CVT, (plus bonnet stripes, rally lights, aero rear spoiler and floor mats).

Thanks for the replys!

My dealer seems quite intrested in my current car (Ecosse 106 MK1 GTi) so they mite let me off
with most mods!!

Hopefully they may want to use it as kinda like a demo as im gona use it as a demo for my future business!

I forgot to mention a full real leather retrim - saw a Jag' with dark red leather intrior - would it suit a silver Mini!?

The plans for the back box would be quite simular to the Mini One turbo - theres a pic on the forums somewhere!

Take care!

Andy

Modifications

Hi

I have had alot of mods done on my mini 18" Wheels, 30 mm springs, cobra seats, piper filter, sway bar, disks, exhaust and aero kit and not fitted by dealer and when the steering pump died they did not kick up any fuss about wheels and springs so i would say it does really depend on the dealer

In the U.S. you have warranty righrs

Here's a nice overview of your rights as it relates to warranties and aftermarket parts, courtesy of a truck tuner. You can easily search the web for the whole Magnuson-Moss Warranty act of 1975.

FACT
Dealers do not like warranty work, because in pays less than normal repair work. By promoting the myth that aftermarket equipment automatically voids warranties, some dealers avoid such low-paying work. Instead, they attempt to charge customers the prime service rate for work, which is rightfully under warranty.

THE LAW
Most vehicle owners are not aware that they are protected by federal law: The Magnuson-Moss Warranty-Federal Trade Commission Improvement Act of 1975. Under the Magnuson-Moss Act, aftermarket equipment, which improves performance, does not void a vehicle manufacture's original warranty, unless the warranty clearly and conspicuously states that aftermarket equipment voids the warranty. Most states have warranty statutes, as well, which provide further protections for vehicle owners. In other words, that means a dealer can’t wiggle out of his legal warranty obligation merely because you install aftermarket equipment. To find out in any aftermarket equipment automatically voids your warranty, check the owner's manual. It is likely the language you are looking for appears under a heading such as "What Is Not Covered" although the language seems negative, remember your vehicle manufacturer is simply saying he does not cover the aftermarket products themselves. He is not saying that the products would void the vehicle warranty.

YOUR RIGHTS
If a dealer is claiming that your warranty is void due to aftermarket equipment. Point out to the dealer the provisions of the Magnuson-Moss Act. Require that he explain to you how the aftermarket equipment caused the problem. It he can't explain or his explanation sounds questionable it is your legal right to demand he comply with the warranty.

FACT
If you are still being unfairly denied warranty coverage, there is recourse. The Federal Trade Commission, which administers the Magnuson-Moss Act, monitors compliance with warrant law. Direct complaints to the FTC (202) 326-3128 It is recommended that if you can take the aftermarket equipment within a reasonable amount of time that you do so. For example, a chip can be removed and reinstalled in less than an hour. There are laws to protect you, but if you can avoid any doubts that the dealer my have… that is always the best course of action.
