Seatbelt light

On other cars that i have owned the seatbelt warning light goes out when the belt is connected. Is it normal on the mini that the light goes out regardless if the belt is connected or not, seems a bit strange to me.

is the light not there to show when there is a problem with the system?

i.e. the light comes on to show the system is armed and working, then it goes out to show there is no problem.

Its not an indication that seat belts are not in use as far as I am aware, well in the UK that is

The only problem I have is knowing which one to drive?

It's to show that the Seatbelt Retention System light is working and then goes out when the system has been checked. Used to tighten the belt in a crash to pin you in your seat reducing back injuries.

It was acceptable in the 80's
