Offline | Xenon fogs Hey, I did a search but to no avail. Anyways, I have a spare Xenon conversion kit laying around that I took out of my Lexus before I sold it and was thinking of installing it in my MCS's fogs. I'll have to get new H11 bulbs, though, because they are H7's and 8500k, which would look WAY off from the OEM 4300k Xenon (tho I am planning on swapping for 6000k). I know many guys from Club Lexus have done it to their Lexus fogs, and I really like the look. Do any of you know of a MINI with this mod, or will I be the first? With the Xenon bulbs being longer than the halogen H11's, do you know if it will fit given the small housing size of the fogs? Thanx! |

Offline | Fog lights are intended to be more yellow because of the way yellow light penetrates fog compared to whiter/bluer light, worth considering as it may look "cool", but could be less effective. |

Offline | And nobody would ever buy a different sort of light just because it looked cool... You could also go the other way and do the orange-yellow fogs as were common 20-30 years ago... -Eric |

Offline | I'm sure they would, but they might not be aware of the effect of different temperature/colour bulbs can have. You mean like these fog lights PIAA sell? http://www.piaa.com/Lamps/Lamp-pages/940.html |

Offline | It is also possible to get Yellow xenons for the fog light area. You just need to get the HID conversion which has 3000k bulbs. This color temp leads to a VERY yellow color which is ideal for foggy situations. A lot of BMW owners do this. Here is a pic. All cars have HID headlights AND HID foglights From left to right: 1st car: Headlights: 5700k Foglights: 5500k 2nd car: Headlights: 3000k Foglights: 6000k 3rd car: Headlights: 8000k Foglights: 8000k ![]() ![]() So it is possible to get the benifits of xenons while maintaing a yellow color to help when it gets foggy outside. The pic also shows what HID fogs look like ![]() |

Offline | I have some advice to give about this sort of mod. If you make fog lights too bright, this could end up being dangerous for you and for others on the road. I implore people to think carefully before modifying brightness of fog lights. If you do this, and actually find that you need your fog lights one day because of strong fog, it could leave you short. |

| Amiga 500 to PS3 20 Years | I don't know about other countries but in the UK it is illegal to use foglights unless visability is below 100 meters. That is very very foggy. So foggy that brightness doesn't really come into the equation. TBH the MINI foglights, along with a lot of other cars, do very little for helping you see through fog when visability is down enough for you to legally be able to use them. ![]() It was acceptable in the 80's |

| polizei -NAM and Focaljet | Man, the UK has a whole bunch of stupid rules! In the US you can use whatever fogs you want, and when you want. I run mine on the way home from work every night, even though theres no fog out I can still see better with them. -Cody "Gizmo" - 03' IB/B MCS! |

Offline | We have similar rules over here, I use them at night when on unlit highways to help me see to the side of the road (just in case there is a kangaroo or wombat lurking), but I have found that the fog lights have been helpful early in the morning when the fog rolls over the mountains. What I've noticed though, is that the brighter the light (like high beams) the more reflection you get back from the fog. |

| Amiga 500 to PS3 20 Years | It's not stupid at all actually. Fog lights cause a lot of dazzling to oncoming traffic especially to drivers of cars with a low seating position. Admittedly the tiny units they fit to cars now aren't too bad but they don't really do an awful lot. If you have some of the old cars with 4 fully functioning fogs on the front they are incredibly bright. Like having 4 main beams coming at you. Mind you there is also a law that driving lamps must not dazzle low flying aircraft ![]() ![]() It was acceptable in the 80's |

Offline | If the bulb is longer, it will probably not center itself at the focal point of the reflector and will deliver a distorted light pattern, potentially causing excessive glare to oncomming traffic. This would be a very bad modification to make and most likely illegal in any civilized country. Read this: http://www.danielsternlighting.com/home.html There is an incredible amount of excellant information about lights, glare, precieved brightness. Motor on, Dudes and Dudettes!!!
