Different coloured bulbs

I drove past a MINI yesterday which had blue bulbs in the circular lights directly beneath the headlights. I know you can replace these bulbs with clear ones, but what is the legality of having the bulbs in other colours?

They'll just be blue sidelight bulbs. The legality is a bit of a grey area. As far as i know you can only display white and amber lights at the front of your vehicle but since the advent of Xenon headlight bulbs (some of which are very blue) i'm not sure where you stand!

They are illegal. They will have no E marks or BS marks on them. Xenon bulbs have them.

If you get stopped you can be prosecuted for impersonating an emergency vehicle. There was a story recently in the paper where a man had some Simpsons figures illuminated blue on his dash. He received points and a fine.

It was acceptable in the 80's

here in the U.S. (in most states) it's illegal to have blue colored lights emitting from your vehicle, as blue is normally the emergency light for law enforcement. Here in Georgia, it's illegal to have the blue Xenon headlights, although local law enforcement sometimes turns a blind eye to those....

I think red's a bit dodgy too mate, only colour you can be truly safe with is white, red and blue are emergency vehicles and orange are diffcult to figure out - green is doctor. UV would be cool

The white LED bulbs are very close to the colour of Xenon bulbs anyway so they're a good option to go for and don't stick out like a sore thumb!

Here in Aust I remember a story of a guy with a pair of plastic Red Noses (from our SIDS - sudden Infant Death Syndrom [ie cot death]) campaign. Noses were above the headlights. Boys in blue pulled him over and read the riot act to him. Coloured lights on the front of cars are a big no no but especially Red. People could think your going away from them at night.

That being said I've noticed a lot of commodores (opel to the UK brethern) with small blue lights under the main headlights.
