Windscreen Wipers

I've always wondered this:-

Why are the two windscreen wipers different? I thought it was just mine at first, but it looks like every MINI has them different.

I'm talking about that extra bit on the bottom of the right hand (drivers) one.

I suspect it is supposed to be an aero aid to keep the wiper on the screen at higher speeds, but I'm not convinced they work that well, especially in strong side winds, where I've found they lift a bit more readily.

I've not noticed my passenger side being any worse at speed, but then I don't lean over & look through that side at speed either, so it could well be better!!!!

Thats a wiper spoiler. It works in the same way as a conventional spoiler you see on the rear of cars.
At speed downforce comes into effect and more firmly presses the blade to the window giving a better wipe.

They can also reduce wind noise in some cases. (unless you've eaten a LOT of baked beans)

You can fit a spoiler blade to the passenger side too it's just considered more important to have 'em on the drivers side!

The spoiler is only one side due to the way in which the air passes over the car and the "arc" in which the wiper goes across the screen in relation to the air passing over it.
