Windscreen Crack/Stress

Hi

I cracked another Windscreen during MTM this year. I cant remember a stone hitting the windcreen at all on both ocasions and the crack has been the exact same, behind the rear view mirror in an 'L' shape.

I've read from posts that there were stress issues with the windscreen but they seem'd to be form early models. Can i bring this up as a warranty issue with BMW??

Was wondering if you had any feed back on this at all. I have got a crack just the same on my MCS. Its been into the delaers today who are insisting there is a small chip. My brother couldn't see a chip at all and said even if there is a tiny chip should not cause a crack. I have now contacted BMW customer services and have them looking into this as I don't believe I should have to go through my insurance when I do think this is a stress type fracture.

i got my insurance company to sort it out, it didnt cost me anything, didnt effect my bonus and this company did a much better job than the garage did the last time when my a pillar blew off driving down the motorway

there was a tiny stone chip where the crack started and i dont think it should have caused a crack cause there was bigger stone chips on it also with no cracks.

I mentioned it to my dealer but they werent interested and i wasnt in the mood to argue over it.

let me know how you get on

I had a cracked ws on my '04 MC. The associate I was working with ran a pen over the scratch to check if there was a chip from a stone. Failing to find one they replaced it under warranty.

The garage told me the chip was at the edge of the screen which given the edging strip isn't possible.

Will let you all know how i get on.

Stress cracks are a common problem. I replaced the windshield in my Mini after it cracked. The dealer denied the warrenty claim, saying that a rock caused it. I was on a Mini run with 15 cars last year and 3 of them had stress cracks. Later I searched on the NAM forum and found that many people had posted about this problem. It seems that BMW dosn't want to have to pay out so they blame rocks for the damage. Since I got the new windshield no cracks in 15,000 miles. I did get a rock chip but no stress crack.

To be fair, I think it's the dealers that won't mend the windscreens as a warranty issue and not BMW. I was told that the fact that they have just said no to my claim that this is a warranty issue means that they haven't even referred it to BMW.

IMO thats what happens alot times if its not the most serious thing, it'd take up too much time if they had to go to BMW for every issue

True, but like my brother pointed out, unless I get them to look into this now, if it happens again and I haven't followed it up the first time then they could just tell me where to go and not all insurance companies are happy to keep handing out new windscreens.

Had a response from BMW. Apparently the garages have been sent a memo saying that tiny chips can be responsible for big cracks in the windscreen so they have to check the windscreen carefully and as such mine isn't a warranty claim. They did agree that this is a bit ridiculous, especially when I told them that the garage had said the stone chip was on the edge of the windscreen which is nearly impossible owing to the edging strip round the windscreen, and that they will take this fruther for me to see what they can do. Not expecting much but am happy to try and push this a bit further as I do not think it is right that a tiny stone chip can crack a windscreen this much. If this is the case, then you probably shouldn't leave your mini outside if there are hailstones coming down as the windscreen won't survive!

This can happen to any year car, not just early models.

The windscreen has just cracked on my three week old cooper s

The crack is just behind the rear view mirror and about 10cm long.

I have checked for stone chips and there are none. I am gutted as the last time I had a windscreen changed (on my last Cooper) it wouldn't stop creaking!

I've just had the windscreen replaced on my MC, no doubt about the cause as it was struck by a large stone in the lower left corner. The interesting thing about it was that although the impact mark was on the outside, the glass cracked on the inside. As the cracks propogated over the next week or so, I did a MINI dealership test with the pen and, where the crack changed direction, there were definite chips missing from the glass that, according to the test, indicates stone damage. This was on the inside of the glass.

I am having mine replaced tomorrow (under the warranty). I took it in today and they have checked it out and agree that the crack was not caused by a stone chip. At least I am getting it done by BMW as they will hopefully do a good job and I wont have a creaky windscreen like on my last cooper after the windscreen was replaced.
