| MINI2 Master (Oh Wow!) | Good people of mini 2... I was speaking with a friend as to whether the "old skool" black number plates with white or silver lettering were legal to put on new cars, I thought one would look fu**ing great on my black/white cooper (soon to be S). I called the police to enquire and they told me it was completely illegal. Incidently, I have since seen 2 new minis, and heard of others with this style number plate. I just wondered what the repercussions could be if i get stopped with the old style plates on. example in picture: Alex. ![]() Black and White Cooper here, soon to be an Electric Blue & White S, with the WORKS!! |

Offline | I think they are illegal on any cars newer than about 1972 (the old M reg?) when the UK's first reflective plates were introduced. + 2002 MINI Cooper S - Dark Silver / White roof, Sport, Premium, Lapis blue leather + 1965 Mini Traveller - Tartan Red / White roof, 1275, Cooper S discs, fully restored/renewed |

| Only Unbalanced | Believe it or not, the State of New York, which prides itself on being progressive but is usually far from, allows old cars to use original license plates. They need to be the same year as the car (I think it's probably 1973 and earlier) and you need to let them know the number. Owner supplies the plate. Good luck in the quest. |

Offline | I have a personal registration number that was issued in 1953 with no prefix or suffix and would love to put a black and white version on my mini - unfortunately its illegal. They are also getting very tight with the standard number plates and are clamping right down on the letters and spacing - I know of several in this area that have been fined and got points. Beware those of you with non standard lettering - plod doesn't bother to issue a warning any more. |

Offline | My MINI has an old-style number - no prefix or suffix. But it's in the standard black on yellow/white configuration. Until recently, the same number was on my classic Mini. Despite being a '96 build car, I got away with silver on black for about 3 years - after all, vey few coppers could tell the difference between a Mark I shell and a Mark V shell The 1960s paint job helped too.But I wouldn't try to get away with it on the new car. Possible repurcussions include fines and ultimately the DVLA "withdrawing" the plate - and if they wanted to get really nasty, they could try to saddle you with a Q-plate too ![]() Ordered my "S" August '01. Arrived July '02. EB with white roof, wheels and stripes, Chili pack, DSC and climate control. Hate those 17" runflats though. Can now be seen all over the West Midlands, as a blue blur passing everything at speed |

Offline | You'd think they have better things to do with their time than to carry around a tape measure, inspecting license tags to see if the letters were the proper height & width. Don't y'all have doughnut shops in the UK for them to hang out in? Chip H. ex-MINI Cooper S owner and all around good-guy |
