Hood Scoop Project for Cooper S

I have yet to see anything being done with aftermarket hood scoops for the Mini...

So I started to toy with the idea of fabbing one myself.
( I am lucky enough to have a friend who works with Carbon Fiber and Glass for a living )

I am in the first phase of the project and have done a mock up using Foam, Plaster and a spare Cooper S hood that was laying around my shop and here is what I have come up with so far...

http://www.mini2.com/galleries/showgallery.php?cat=1787

( PLEASE, no flames about how disorganized my shop is, that's the wife's job to hound me about clean up )

I had the hood lying about as it was slighty damaged by truck tire debris and was subsequently repalced by insurance...

Please let me know what you think...

My next step is to have a mold cast off the mock up.

We will then cast a fiber glass part and use that to work out all air flow, cosmetic, mounting and structural details. Once the glass part is "perfect" we will use it to make a second mold. The second mold will allow us to begin the carbon work for a finished part.

My goal is to be able to use this scoop to mount a larger, aftermarket intercooler and postion it so that it is angled into the wind flowing through the scoop.

I have a lot of the details worked out and will cover that later on.

All feedback welcomed.

Hood Scoop...

Thanks...

It's going to take about 2 more weeks to get the first mold ( Material and time being limited )

I'll post pics of the whole process.

If you could find a way to work the profile of the inlet into something that would fit in the standard bonnet aperture?

It would look a lot better than other attempts at getting more air through the stock intercooler, ought to provide similar benefits, would be much cheaper/quicker to fit than the whole bonnet approach and would have a wider market.

Like the idea though - it ought to be possible to fit a 'really' big intercooler.

Hood Scoop

Thanks for input...

I think I may have some folks confused...
The goal is to have a bolt on Hood Scoop, not an entire bonnet.

I will am trying to come up with a kit that allows you to cut and re-inforce the existing bonnet, then bolt on - or bond the scoop in place.
I am also trying to use some of the geometry of the existing scoop apertutre to provide an anchoring point.

I am also looking at some internal air damns to channel air to the correct places once the scoop has been mounted on the hood.

I will update once we make some more progress...

That's encouragement for you....

As a work in progress it looks pretty good, I think its only fair to reserve judgement until the final result is shown

lol

Look OK (a bit reserved though) not really my thing as its a touch OTT bulge wise for what might be achievable with less increase in side profile ??! Not an expert and not fully understanding all of what you want to achieve with it so can't really judge too harshly. Could be a lot beter than some of the kev boy bonnet scoops on Novas and other cars so I'm up for someone having a go at fabricating something a touch more subtle for MINI users.

you might wanna have a look over a NAM. I saw people discussing a air inlet and outlet like yours to aid the design of the DFIC ( a different type of intercooler that channels air straight back rather than forcing it to do a 90 deg turn.

The back side of it needs to change IMO. The sharp edges and flat surface don't work with the lines of the MINI. Roll it off and round it out and it's look better.

?? Will the final product require removal of metal? If you want to improve air volume you'd want to open up the area under your scoop. So you would need to remove the center section of the hood. The current curve is where a good deal of the rigidity of the hood comes from. Removing that will weaken the hood so reinforcement needs to be part of the plan.
If you aren't going to open it up then I can't see a large advantage to this as the volume will be quite limiting.

There are also a couple or designs that help the standard IC as well.
None are sponsors here so the heck with them

yeh but they've been done to death. Ram air this n that. There is still too much blocking the underside of the TMICs. Is it possible to create some venturi effect at the back opening with a design like this you reckon?

Maybe sofa wants to get in contact with them tho

I like it! Nice work. Go full retro, and put the guage cluster in the rear of the scoop?

Exactly.
That's why I was asking about removing the center of the hood for clearance. Channeling air from the rear of this scoop would be fairly easy.

It would then be approaching "that other design"

FYI, www.myminiparts.com sells hood scoops -- not sure if it's what you're after, but just in case.
