My roof has almost driven me crazy

It started with a roof full of bird poo, (only on for 3 hours-ish) that wouldnt budge after trying different things and spending a lot of money I decided to get the roof machine polished last Saturday and the marks vanished except - I stopped on way home to fill car with petrol and noticed a lovely dent in my roof that wasnt there! contacted the guy who polished roof who didnt want to know

I then put peanut butter on rubber bit above front windscreen and the following day it turned WHITE! so a bottle of trim detailer later its ok again

I then go on bird poo watch at work today and after a couple of hours yes I was bombed and went to action like an olympic athlete! In the panic I sprayed the roof with lots of quick detailer and wiped it off then suddenly realised it shouldnt be used on hot surface and direct sunlight! I then rush to get a basin of water from staff room and look like something out of 'its a knockout' rushing up the car park with it only to find two thirds of it gone (mostly over me) by the time I get there! I throw it over the roof and go back to work.

Check the car at lunchtime and notice the water has now dried to baked in not so lovely bubble like marks and get the detailer out again in a panic! I apply more and realise again its far too hot and sunny, no shade anywhere and again run like the clappers for more water!!!!! Everyone looks at me like I am a loony but I dont care!

I then dry the roof and notice the marks still there along with my lovely dent so depressed. Tonight I got dent fixed (great result) and my hubby and I spent 4 long hours cleaning the roof with paint cleaner and getting the marks out. They look like they have gone so I am keeping fingers crossed they wont appear again and that I havent done permanant damage to my roof paint finish. I now realise I love my mini but detest the black roof and it has made me love my mini a little bit less.....

Sorry to go on but its done me good to get my vent out! I thought owning a mini was supposed to be fun? All because of a bird poo.....

You have a beautiful MINI there!
I love the PW/B combo.
Worth the hassle to keep the Black in check I reckon.

Marysmin1 - the trick to getting bird poo and their stains off of the paint work is simple, and I only found out the other day!:

1 used tea bag

Rub that over the affected area, and voila.

Good luck!

1 used tea bag, any particular brand ? Do Yorkshire Tea bags work ?

Oh, and are they used wet or dry or with milk. If used with milk do you put the milk on the roof first or the tea bag ?

Haha - I presume you're having a laugh, but just in case.

One tea bag is needed that has been used (ie most of the tea used), it does not need milk, sugar or Tea-Mate, just to have been through boiling water. LOL

I can sympathise, this weekend I will be trying a 5th different polish to remove 3 and a half years worth of scratches from my roof.

Sorry to hear about your dent, is it possible that you didn't notice it before because of the condition of the paint, perfect paint really highlights any dents or dings.

You did the right thing in trying to remove it with lots of QD, not sure about throwing the water on it though, you would idealy want to dry it again after, you don't want to be doing that though if the car is not spottlessly clean or you will scratch it. You can avoid the water marks by using filtered water, do you have a drinks cooler at work that filters the water? if so fill up a bottle from that.

The bird crap will have less of an effect if you get some decent protection on the car, in the form of a sealent and then a wax, what products I would reccomend depends on, how much you want to spend and how often you will wax it. The poo will have to eat through the sealent and wax before it can get to the paint.

I might be teaching granny to suck eggs, but the best thing you can do to take care of it is use proper washing equipment and technique.

www.detailingworld.co.uk will tell you all you need to know!

Did you honestly try this? Was the marks baked in and wouldnt come out with hand polishing? This seems unbelieveable, dont tell me I have spent an utter fortune getting the marks out and you used a tea bag Come on spill the beans how you discovered this!!!!!!

Mary - I've done it with stains baked on for a couple of days, works well.

Try AutoGlym afterwards too. It's an old family secret!

now that the roof is clean, how about a couple or 3 coats of Zaino so any future bird bombings won't be as apt to stain

You may have had a genuine dent there but you may not realise that the black roof will frequently distort and appear to be dented when parked up in hot weather; this then pops back into shape as the car cools again.

Tigger.

Once I painted my black roof Swamp Holly Orange, I never had another problem with it.

My favorite MINI color. Chili Red and Orange. Ah, those were the days.

In future don't worry so much about making the roof cool before using Quick Detailer - if you're only using it to get spots off and not give the whole roof a "detail", its fine in all sorts of heat - I've used it in some pretty hot conditions at car shows here (as have many many other people) with no problems at all.
