not legal
can dump the holder and just fix the plate, can even trim plate slightly
have seen a few minis with japanese style plates as well, not sure if they are legal

Interesting on this, I can't see why it wouldn't be legal as long as it can be seen on the front of the car and not obscured, I reckon would be ok, will try and find out off a couple of mates in blue.

The E types are legal because they come under the pre 1973 rules. MX-5's are illegal as they must follow the British Standard BS AU 145d that details their construction and crucially their strength. A vinyl sticker is not strong enough hence why they are mounted to a piece of perspex.

However, having said all this, you'd be unlucky to be done for having a stick on plate.

There are lots of PDF's on number plates here: Number plates and registration marks

It was acceptable in the 80's

stick on plates

I have a stick on plate on my MC & had 1 on my prev MCS - I read up quite a bit on UK regs on front number plates - from what Iunderstood you don't have to have one if the car has been manufactured or modified in such a way that a standard plate cannot be mounted or as Root Ginger said if its pre '73.

I have 4 spots mounted in the lower bumper area which is why I took the standard one off. The stick on plate can still be clearly seen from the front i.e if a police car was in front of me, camera, etc.

Yet to be pulled over (touches wood) in 3-yrs with this plate & have driven through most counties in the UK with no trouble from our friends in blue!

A friend of mine spent weeks looking into this, and even got friends who work in the police to find out some info. He has a reflective vinyl numberplate so it is clearly visible at all times and has been told it is perfectly legal, which is better than 'losing' your numberplate like I have a few times

I'll find a pic...

That looks strange, Like the number plate is part of the MINIs paintwork reflection.
