urgent question - can roof displays be removed?

it looks like i am about to buy a mini one today but i realised late last nite that the car looks like it may have a scotland flag on the roof

can these be removed or do mini spray the flags on?

and how much would it cost to have removed?

hope someone can help!

cheers

They are vinyl stickers and should be easily removed by heating (a hot air paint stripper on its lowest setting is ideal) and simply peeling it off a bit at a time; the warm days at this time of year make it easier still. It's so easy that there's no need to pay a professional to do it.

Good luck with the MINI

Tigger.

cheers mate,

would you notice an outline and different shade of paint when it is removed as the car is 51 plate?

As the above post says removal is easy by heating although i would suggest a hairdryer rather than a paint stripper, even on it lowest setting, as for leaving a differnt shade of paint it would depend on what colour the paint is as certain paint discolours more than others. only way to find out is to remove decals. although a good quality polish will help hide the discolouration if any.

I would get the garage to remove it as part of the deal and if there is a difference to rectify it.

I won a mini a few years back and it was covered in stickers... I removed them with a kettle of boiling water... real simple. And then to get paint work to all matched I just plished it... you could not tell they were there.

How easliy the vinyl comes off depends on the quality and age of it. My last MINI was three years old when I took the roof decal off (official MINI), it was the worst job I have ever done on a car. The vinyl had deteriorated that badly. Tried everything everyone suggested on here but it just came off in tiny bits. My fingernails hurt for days. Worth it in the end though.

Sorry Fella, didn't want to put a dampener on it for you. Mine was a monochrome UJ and I started with the smallest pieces first. Gave up in the end leaving a silver St Georges cross. Sold the car two weeks later, well being Welsh I had too*** I am not the most patient of people when it comes to this sort of thing. Used loads of glue remover too. Personally would recommend paying someone to do it for you.

*** This wasn't the main reason for selling the car.

Good luck with it and welcome to MINI madness. Glad you sorted your insurance. You'll love your MINI, take care of it

Get yourself to some of your local club meets and stuff, the social side of MINI ownership is great.

Could always talk to the MINI Pirate and get a whole new roof graphic of your own choice fitted .. cheaper than a respray!! intro

Having removed vinyl graphics from my own MINI I recommend a hairdryer (more gentle than a paint stripper), lots of patience and invest in a bottle of Meguiars Deep Crystal polish or Autoglym Intensive Tar Remover.

Goo luck is all i can say.

My mate bought one with a union jack roof. BMW quoted 17 hours to remove it. So he done it himself, and sure enough took a whole weekend, and some ****ing elbow greace with acetone.

In the end the vinyl had marked the roof and he needed to respray the roof.

Clear coat paints should not fade unlike old style "two pack" paint. The colour is preserved under a coat of clear paint. I've yet to see a clear coat car with any evidence of fading.

It was acceptable in the 80's
