Talking *** My Aero Bumper (UPDATED) ***

Hi guys,

I saw a bargain the other day on fleabay and had to buy it. I cant afford the Aero kit all up front so I've been looking for bits and bobs and saw this for £100...had to have it. Was that a reasonable price or not?

Anyway thats not my question, here are a few pics and I just wondered if everything looks ok as I think the back of the bumper looks strange!?! The guy has also said the bumper is brand new and has never been fitted! I wouldnt of laid it on the concrete on the painted side but nevermind!

Also I will need it to be sprayed Electric Blue...how much do you think that will cost?

Cheers!

P.S- What is the difference between the Cooper-S rear bumper and Aero-kit bumper, as they look the same to me?!

Anybody post any pictures of them side by side, so my little brain can compare them?!

The front aero bumper is the same on cabs and solid-roof MINIs, the rear aero bumper although it's slightly different (the cut outs for the hinges), the rear bumper on normal MINIs, is the same as on the cabriolet, it just has the cut outs for the hinges if that makes sense , you just need to make the cut outs and add the fittings off your original bumper or order replacement fittings keeping your original complete , a good body-shop should be able to do it for you, don't do it if your not 100% sure you can do it (cut it), if you don't get the cut outs in the right place it could be ruined . so if a cheap aero-kit comes along don't let it put you off that it's not off a cabriolet .

I have done it so I know it can be done .

Sorry no pics but some people actually prefer the S rear bumper to the aero one partly because the S rear bumpers have proper grills in them not just stickers and they look pretty good with the front aero bumper and the standard rear S bumper, plus the S rear bumpers will be easier & cheaper to get hold off .

Good points randall,on my last Cooper s I just put the side skirts on and I thought they made a big difference.
Im on the lookout for an aero kit ,but I might think about what you say about just putting the s rear bumper on >>>>>>>>>however how do you get around the exhaust cut out position issue ?

I'm a little confused your MINI profile says, you have a 1st Gen S .

So judging by the comment I presume you have you got a COOPER / ONE cabriolet instead off or as-well as your S ?

I once fitted a S exhaust to a ONE D (the owner didn't want the rear bumper changing as he liked the chrome), so i tried just fitting the rear lower valence of the S bumper (black part with the cut out for the exhaust), it didn't quite fit as the normal COOPERs & ONEs inc D have a slightly deeper / thicker valence to the S ie the valence didn't match the end pieces of the bumper (the owner just cut an arch in the centre of his valence as the D exhaust exits underneath so they don't have a cut out in the rear valence for an exhaust (this wont help you one bit )).

I have since seen a number of COOPERs with S rear bumpers on, with the standard COOPER exhausts fitted, with the cut out for the exhaust on the right hand side, the only way I can think that they have done it, apart from getting a piece made (unlikely but not impossible), is to put all three sections of the rear valence on ie the lower valence (cut out for exhaust on the right) and the two ends, hence everything will match, however I have never done this myself so I'm not 100% sure if this is what they have done or if it's in-fact possible?

I'm working on a S and a COOPER over the next week, if I've got time I may be able to check and see if they can be swapped over, unless someone has already done it and wants to confirm that it can be done?

Here is a pic to show the differences "'COOPERMAN'" .
  • Top: Aero.
  • Middle: Normal S.
  • Bottom: Modified S to accommodate the COOPER exhaust.

Yeah I bet you would give me a 100 notes for the bumper...I got it for a total bargain!!

Its going to cost me £100 to get it painted Electric Blue and Phil @ Mini Pirate has sorted me some awesome decals to go on!

Heres my car next to one with the aero bumper...this is what made me want to get it!

Another silly question, does the standard cooper-s exhaust fit in the aero-kit perfectly, or is there some modification required?
I only say this as the aerokit seems to go alot lower than the standard s one!!

I always try and fit the aero-kits to my MINIs, it's always nice when a cheap one comes along , if you have only got the rear bumper the rest will turn up eventually!, I don't like the genuine silver stickers that you get with / for the aero bumper (it can depend on the MINI though), I always made my own matt black ones, but I have since seen some of the ones that Phil @ Mini Pirate has done and they look pretty good (the grill effect ones) .

It's already been answered, I had to go out ½ way through my reply .

It's not that hard really there are threads if you search on the subject (I'd look but I've been told I have to get off the computer ), my only advice there would be to try and get all the rear brackets with the exhaust if possible including the ones bolted to the car .
