Are numbers legal (UK)

I was contemplating have the number 3 within a round circle put on my doors, but I was told that having racing style numbers are not legal in the UK cos it can encourage racing (i don't need numbers to do that, just some t!t in a cr@p Ford).
Has anyone put numbers on their MINI?

Red/White Cooper White 16's.

As far as I know, it's not illegal.

When you're affiliated with a motorsport organisation though, they ask that you put a cross through them for normal road use. One of the JCC boys+girl could probably confirm this.

No, it's not illegal to have numbers on your doors at all

disclaimer: i might be wrong!

I got told by a copper ages ago it was perfectly ok? Can't even begin to think why it would be illegal...

Bloody confusing laws!

Hi Allcoopedup,

Thats rubbish and there is nothing to stop you doing it. Look at the Foxtons Mini's which all have unique numbers on their doors to distinguish them in case they cut you up at the lights!

Normally when you see racing cars on the road they have to have an X through their numbers

i have seen some of the JCC cars like this....

nothing to stop you putting a circle on your door, but the legality of the numbers i cant be sure, and if you get a copper that doesnt like it you can be sure that it will be illegal...

its like the single wiper thing... someone got done for having the wiper in the "upright" position in the middle of the screen, its not illegal, but the copper said it was...

I'm sure other London residents that will agree with me here; there are what seems like hundreds of Foxton's (the estate agents) Mini Coopers with racing numbers on their doors all over the capital's roads. I think that even the dimmest of plods will have noticed them. They've been like that since mini2s were available and are most certainly not illegal.

How does Foxton's get away with it then?

They're not getting away with anything. Its not illegal.

This idea that its not allowed because it will encourage racing is simply not true.

I think you can lose your racing drivers license if you drive on the Public Highway with a racing number fixed to your racing car. Hence drivers put an "X" through the number.

They are not illegal on public roads.
But you won't be allowed to enter a racing circuit with a number on your car.

Well I have!

Black circle with yellow "2". Maybe its not a racing number because they have black numbers on white squares? I've had them for nearly a year and 11000 miles inc winding the window down to ask a Policeman why he had diverted the traffic. He was not in the slightest bit concerned-not that I asked him of course.

So does that make the "ONE" on the back of MINIs an encouragement to race too? LOL

Last weeks Auto Express magazine did a feature on urban myths related to cars and driving.

This was one of the questions asked.

They said "racing numbers on a road car IS illegal because it can encourage road racing".

I think thats bloody stupid if you ask me.

I can;t remember what source they were using but it was a traffic cop from somewhere.

Confirmed - MSA regs say you cannot drive a car on the highway with numbers showing - technically crossing them through is not good enough and most JCC'rs now remove them or oblitarate with gaffer - MSA will endorse / remove race liciences if you are caught - Of course the MSA have no authority to take away your DLVC licience

My guess is that there is not a specific law about race numbers but rather it is covered by a generalisation such as 'no member of the public may promote or be seen to encourage racing on the highway'

So what exactly is a "race" number. Does the number have to be any particular colour and is the shape size or colour of the background important?

Would the number spelt in letters be illegal, or do I have to get booked and let a Court decide.

I suspect that if I'm driving like a model motorist minding my Ps 'N Qs that it will not cause a problem. If however I smoke the wheels on the starting line grid, sorry I meant traffic lights changing to green, then I might get the numbers used against me I guess.
Also who would get booked, the driver, the owner, or both?

Is it instant booking, or are you told to remove the numbers?

Lots more questions I know, but I do believe that it is an attack on free expression and that my Human Rights are being infringed.

By the same token, you could be charged for riding a racing bike, having a chequered flag roof, bonnet stripes, bodykit, or any mention of the word "Sport" written on your car.

What a petty country we live in!

I saw a new white beetle in the style of herbie. If it's illegal looks like he ain't gonna be when they tell him to remove all the decoration.

Question So if having numbers on your doors is illegal...

So if having numbers on your doors is illegal, why does every Van and Lorry that you see on the UK roads not get pulled over?

After all, don't most of them have numbers (albeit phone and fax numbers) clearly showing?

I don't think (m)any court in the land would be able to make this stick, IMHO.

Question Whos car is it?

I am british and live in Canada. What type of communist state has the UK turned into? My god, it is your car if you want to put a number on the side of your car go ahead, knock yourself out. As long as you are not driving like a moron or endangering other peoples lives, breaking the road laws, who really truly cares. Why then aren't Faxtons estate agents pulled over for having flames painted on the cars? They are more distracting than the numbers. You are drawn to the flame before you spot the numbers.

Rant over.
