Offline | UK MINIs don't have them. You've been looking at too many pictures of US and Canadian MINIs!!! ![]() What follows is probably more than you want to know: ![]() They aren't indicators. They are called sidemarker lights and are fitted to every car sold in US or Canada (since 1968) due to safety regulations. They are both lights and reflectors, amber in front, red in the rear. On some cars the stylists cleverly blend these reguired lights/reflectors into wraparound front turn indicators or rear taillights so they are not so noticiable, but they are always present in one form or another on the front and rear of all cars sold in the US or Canada. They are switched on as part of the running lights of the car and their purpose is to help illuminate the position of a car at night when viewed from the side (such as when a car is pulling out from a darkened side street or driveway). Yes, way back when there must have been some accident study that showed the need for them. Since they have to be on the car in order to sell it in the US or Canada, I think the MINI stylists did a good job trying to integrate them into the wheel arch shape, repeating the theme front to rear. ![]() + 2002 MINI Cooper S - Dark Silver / White roof, Sport, Premium, Lapis blue leather + 1965 Mini Traveller - Tartan Red / White roof, 1275, Cooper S discs, fully restored/renewed |
