I am considering getting a pair of chrome mirrors for my MINI and I am wondering if I could install them by my self.

Anybody bought the chrome covers from their dealer and installed them?

How much do they cost without installation? My dealer asks for $280.00 CAD$ (approx $185.00 US$) installed!

You can easily install them yourself, just get some spoons and use the handles to lift the clips of the existing ones, you'll see what I mean when you have the new covers in your hands.

in the UK they are £65 inc VAT, or £85 inc VAT and fitting.

You can actually prize them off with your fingers... just start at the top near the window and gently pull at them. work you way around the top and they should just pop off...

with practice it takes about a minute each side.

I wish my dealer was as cheap as yours minty! The chrome mirrors from Vines of Gatwick (Crawley) are £33 each before VAT

Are dealers allowed to inflate their prices like that?

I'd suggest you buy them off Minty's dealer then.....just give them a call....Damon Hill MINI 01926 333840. They were £65 delivered

Thanks for the advice skinnyrunt. Unfortunately I have already ordered them from Vines (1 is in, the other is on back order). I'll remember Damon Hill in future though. Do you think my dealer might bring the price down if I mention the huge difference in price from other dealers?

They probably won't but it's always worth a try...just remind them of the fact that you'll never bother getting parts off of them in the future(not as this will work). But like I say it's worth a go.
