Offline | I wanted bonnet stripes and my wife didn't. So the wheels in my head started turning and next thing I know I'm visiting a sign shop and returning home to build my own magnetic stripes. I was lucky the shop I do business with at work gave me scrap material so it cost me nothing. It took me about 3 hours to trim the scraps straight and apply the black vinyl to the white magnetic material. Here it is. |

Offline | They look great! Good idea. The only negative might be if moisture is allowed to remain between the paint and the strips - it will eat up the paint. I had this happen before with a magnetic "GB" sticker on the back of a car. I suggest you remove the stripes often to let the paint breath. + 2002 MINI Cooper S - Dark Silver / White roof, Sport, Premium, Lapis blue leather + 1965 Mini Traveller - Tartan Red / White roof, 1275, Cooper S discs, fully restored/renewed |

Offline | Thanks, I was aware of the moisture problems and plan to remove them at least once a week. I take them off when i wash the car and after it is all dry replace them. I will also wash the stripes on both sides. Sometimes I plan to take them off just to change the look of the car. I have tested them at 80 mph with a head wind and they stay on well. Mike |

Offline | Great Idea! You could probably get a set of bonnet stripe stickers from the dealer (or a MINI2 sponsor), then use them as a template for the magnetic material. It is usually in a large sheet. You may be able to have it cut where you purchse it. This should help determine the correct degree of curve, if any. |

Offline | Cool, even better than the real thing!! Looks good on your car. Furthermore, fi you get bored of just Black stripes, you could get some more Vynal and do a different design - perhaps chequered or something?? Hope no one steals them, although I am sure no one will realise..... |

Offline | long replies Thanks for all the feedback. I've been working out of town the past couple of days and unable to check this thread. Now for some answers: 1.TheInca :"Where did you get the magnets to do this I want to make some other type of decals for my MINI." Just go to a sign shop that does vinyl lettering and signs. they will probably do the magnetic door signs for cars too. 2.planeguy :"yes, yes.....all the details please." The stripes are made from magnetic sign material. It came in white on the front side and a dark color on the back. It usually is a roll of material. Mine was scrap from the shop I do business with. It measures 0.0325" thick (based on my self measurement). Mine are 4 1/2" wide and cut straight down the length with no curve. It takes at least a 33" long piece. You may want to get an extra inch or two. Remember it takes two pieces. It can be cut with scissors or a razor blade knife. Since it came in white I had to place black vinyl strips down the center. That was the hardest part. Putting the black on straight and getting the bubbles out. 3.wow: "Brilliant idea you should sell me a white pair of stripes" They are easy to make and the material comes in white. Get a sign shop to cut two 4 1/2" wide by 34" long pieces and trim the ends with scissors. I am more than happy to let you or anyone else try them on if you're near Houston TX, USA. 4.PortRhombus: "how far are the stickers raised from the actual paintwork?" 0.0325" or .80mm by my own measurement with a digital micrometer. It is really cool because they don't look like the stick up any more than vinyl stripes. PLEASE NOTE: These sizes work on a Cooper S and have not been tried on a regular MINI. Also, the stripes will only lay down flat with out bubbles if they are bending in primarily one direction at a time. So I could not spread the front of my stipes wider or they will not stick down smoothly. They do stick down completely where they are positioned in the pictures. They have been tested at 120 mph and did not come loose. The Temperature was 80 F. 5.monsta: "The moral of the story is, never listen to your wife" Wrong. Always listen to your wife (I love mine). Families are forever! Cars are only temporary. Mike ![]() |

Offline | I NEED YOUR ADVICE MFEIDLER Before this thread I was curious about Viper stripes going across the whole of my car. However I still love my mini in solid black. Thats when I saw your thread. I love the idea. Its a perfect solution. Just a few questions though... Would it be possable to have two 9" thick stripes across the centre of the car? Is their a problem with the contours on the bodywork effecting how the magnets 'attract'? (maybe a totally flat surface needed) Finally, Im worried about the raised contour down the center of the bonnet (mini one/cooper), Going around the spoiler (if possable anyway), and around the rear number plate where the body is indented in? Plz help me before I go and buy the stuff! Cheers |
