17" wheels damaging bodywork

Whilst washing the cooper I noticed that the plastic side sills were severely pitted and 'chipped' in the area that flares out just in front of the rear wheels.

It appears that debris is being fired off of the front wheels and is hitting the side sills.

I have the 17" s spoke wheels and was wondering if any one has similar problems or has come up with a solution to prevent damage.

I am due to have all the black plastic painted and want to find a solution as this chipping will look far worse on paintwork than unfinished plastic.

I haven't seen MINI mudflaps advertised anywhere!

Don't seem to have this problem with my 16's yet - perhaps I'm just lucky? Anyway the reason you've not seen the mudflaps is because they look 'orrible!

I have 18's and mine are really chipped
When you get them painted have a protective film put over these areas to stop the stone chips - its what Porsche cover the front of the 911's with to keep them looking good
I think 3M make it....

A Black One to a VX220 .. onto a 250bhp Focus RS . . . and now an 05 MCS

I have the same problem in my Red Cooper with 17' S Spokes. I was also going to get the black plastic sprayed but cannot deal with the paint being chipped all over....it will just look a mess. Let me know if you find a fix!

Thanks

I had 15" wheels on mine at first and changed to 17" S Spoke to stop the chipping infront of the rear wheels. It's a lot less than it was. Maybe the 16" are the way to go.

I use Armourfend on my car. It's expensive but very very good!

I had not heard about the problem before hence the post but it seems there are many people with the same.

There is a small 'spat' on the rear arches that sticks out a little way, i'm not sure what it does but I may order 2 more from the dealer and see if I can fit them to the front arches in the line of fire to deflect some of the crap.

Has anyone seen any suitable mud flaps.

I didn't have too much of a problem with my 215 tyres on 16s...

The front mudflaps are barely noticeable and may solve your problem

for those poeple who used armourfend, how much did it cost to have it installed? I want it on the arches and the section at the bottom bewteen the wheels as im having it all painted. Once installed, is it obvious its there? i dont wanna ruin the look of the car. Finnally....do the company install it for you? because i dont trust myself to do it! thanks

Just come across this thread. I have front flaps on my 03 S ( fitted free by dealer) Do not seem to have any chipping in area mentioned. Dealer was going to fit rear ones but found that the shape of the S rear is different to the Cooper, so they could not fit them. Not dissapointed though as now think that they would have probably been OTT. Besides had them on my COOPER and they didn`t seem to slow down the muck sticking to the a%"e end
Hope this helps
