Offline | I don`t give a t**s if it`s considered to be "nationalistic" . . . Well, not that it matters to some, obviously - but our forefather`s fought for the Union Jack and I, for one, care that the image of the flag is "right". I don`t care if it`s upside down or back to bl***y front but it should represent the national flag as accurately as possible even if it then happens to look better anyway. The Union Jack is symbolic! . . . it`s not simply a pretty roof pattern! Some of the designs depicted here do not truly represent our national flag . . . as such it`s not the Union Jack . . . simple as that! If you`re happy with a symmetrically incorrect design, then don`t refer to it as the "Union Jack"! How, for example, would our US friends react to a flag called "The Stars & Stripes" applied to a National `treasure` if it didn`t truly represent the flag of The United States of America even in it`s most basic form? Okay I`ll climb down from my soapbox now but I feel it`s a serious issue, and one which can be so easily put right! Obviously it`s an awful lot to ask here! Typically here in the UK . . who gives a damn anyway? |

Offline | Re: I don`t give a t**s if it`s considered to be "nationalistic" . . . Jakx, as you may know, we Americans take our flag very seriously. But, there is also a long history of our US flag being used abstractly - on clothing, for decorations, even on vehicles. An example of this is the picture below from the Easy Rider movie. More than 30 years ago this use of the flag this way caused a big controversy as it wasn’t properly displayed and was seen as disrespectful. However, these days it would probably be viewed by most Americans as a symbol of patriotism - perhaps even more so since 11 September when flying the flag has increased substantially. Still, it would be much easier to display a correct Union Jack on the MINI’s rectangular roof then the Stars and Stripes correctly over a teardrop gas tank or helmet. + 2002 MINI Cooper S - Dark Silver / White roof, Sport, Premium, Lapis blue leather + 1965 Mini Traveller - Tartan Red / White roof, 1275, Cooper S discs, fully restored/renewed |

Offline | Re: Who cares, they both look great !! Yea, you should be sorry Jakx. How many posts and how many threads does it take to explain that the Union Jack (Flag) is usually flown one way, and upside down as a distress signal. Some flags for the roofs are done traditionaly, and others are done symmetrically because it looks better. No doubt there are some serious copyright issues to use the Union Jack (Flag) on the roof of a car. Some companies may have obtained it and others didnt. You could call yours a Union Jakx. (Just kidding, G'day mate )Last edited by Basil : Jan 13th, 2002 at 04:01 AM. |

Offline | Oh geez, sorry dinger. I'm still a bit sensitive after a few bad experiences here last week!!!. Tried to stay away but it was no good, MINI2.com is a drug. As an ex-pat i'd love to put "the jack" on the roof of my S, but a friend here has a UJ roof on his classic Cooper S and it just attracts too much attention of the wrong kind !. I will admit though that as patriotic as I still am, I (personaly) would not be too concerned over the technical aspects. It's a flag after all, and should be flying on a mast (the Correct way up). For some reason I would also only put it on a red MINI. Don't know why, just seems to suit it better. thanks cheers |

Offline | Re: Re: anyone know . . . Bruce, I don`t know about the upside down bit - but if you rotate the "proper" MINI flag here through 180 degrees it`ll remain exactly the same `way round`! Of course you`re right when you say that national flags are often stylised - but the Union Jack has a fundamental geometry that I believe should at least be adhered to on the UK MINI. It also happens to look better - that`s why it`s the way it is. I`m simply saying - why change it? Taking it to the edge is not an issue for me! |
