Offline | Difference between driving light and fog light Can someone tell me the difference between a fog light and a driving light in regards to putting Rally lights on the MINI? MossMINI's rally lights comes as 1 driving light and 1 fog light. What's the logic? Shouldn't both lights be the same? Won't they look mismatched??? Help me understand, please!!!!! |

Offline | Thanks for the definition. I guess I still don't quite grasp why MossMINI would supply one of each. Does that mean when you have the rally lights on that only 1 light is actually on? For instance, when I want fog lights, only the left or right light is on with the normal lights? Thus I get a 3 lighted car? It's always been my understanding that you used a pair of fog lights. Thanks! |

Offline | Sure, go here: http://www.mossmini.com/Shop/ViewPro...eIndexID=34609 I know it's weird and I confirmed it with Technomage who bought the kit. I just don't get it or how you use them! ------------------------------- Part of the description is this: The base kit includes the Light Bar, 1 Fog and 1 Driving lamps and high quality wiring kit that accepts up to four lights. Need even more light? Simply purchase either a fog or driving lamp upgrade (or both) and plug them in. |

Offline | Fogs should be mounted low so the beam lights the road with minimum reflection off fog clouds. Their lens' are cut to allow a flat wide arch of light a short distance. Driving beams are mounted higher to get the benefit of range out of the light. They throw light in a tight pattern further. You would not want to use these in the fog as reflection would impair your vision. To use one of each, you'd have to have them switched separately and, as mentioned, go with a three eye look. Why anyone would offer such a kit is beyond me because when they're wired normally to work as a pair, they'd be useless in the fog. -- '03 S B/W |

Offline | Moorlockx, That was my understanding as well. Well, it's good to know I'm not the only one that can't understand their logic. I sent an email to Mossmini to see what their response is and will post it when they do. |

Offline | Please post the response from Mossmini when you get it. I was also curious about combining both fog and driving lamps. I just assumed that the wiring kit would include two switches to activate either fogs or driving. Hopefully you will have better luck getting a response from them as they did not return my email. I was also curious to know if anyone had purchased either the MossMini kit or the lamp bar from Minisport and could give a run through on the installation and how difficult it was. I am not terribly car crafty, but wanted to give it a try. Specifically how much damage does attaching the bar do to the car and can it be removed without leaving noticable scars. |

Offline | It was very common in the "old days" to have one of each. The "fog light" has a "wide" beam that lights the side of the road. The "driving light" has a "long" beam that lights far down the road. Both lights look the same but have different reflectors. In the old days (when I had a TR4A) the headlights in the USA were not very good and I had one wide beam and one long beam That would work today if there was a seperate awitch to turn both on at same time in high beam conditions. I use the fog lights in bumper of my MINI to light the side of the road in "non fog" conditions. My PIAA lights are wired to the high beam switch (factory wiring). The factory fog lights go off when the high beams go on. The factory "driving lights" come on with the high beams. I have two wide beam lights that come on with my high headlights to light the sides of the road when my factory fog light go off. |

Offline | Mossmini.com replied: Subject: You want 2 or 2... go for it ! You have the option of 'subbing' this kit all around, if you wish. They come this way simply because the original Cooper 'S' rally cars of the mid-late sixties were typically set up in this configuration.... 1 drive, 1 fog lamp. Thats all. It can be wired up in both on - one on or the other - both fogs or drivers.... whatever. Thanks very much. KT 07/01/03 Keith S. Taber Jackson Racing / Moss Motors Technical Service Department |
