Question Clear light installation question

I am just installing a set of clear rear lights on my Cooper S and have a question about the seals on the lights. On the standard pair I am removing there is a foam rubber seal around the edge close to the lens area (stuck on foam rubber about 2.5" wide).

On the new clear lights there is no seal. Do you have to remove the seal from the old lights and reuse this or it just that the new clear lights no longer have this foam rubber seal ?

It looks like it might allow water penetration without the seal but surely you do not hae to reuse an old seal ????

I am going to fit the new clear lights straight out the box (not reusing the seals) and will speak to the Mini dealer tomorrw but if anyone who has fitted clear lights could make some comments I would appreciate it.

Cheers.

All I can say is that my new lamps (the red and white/clear ones) waiting to go into my new car when it arrives have the seal.

Steve, there are two seals, one close to the lens and one further back. Do you have both on your lamps, any chance of a photo (my email address is jon.simpson@btinternet.com).

Cheers.

Steve,

Are these lights the new clear ones with a red reflector built-in? I just heard about them at the dealer as the new replacements for the all-clear ones that were giving them RTA problems. If so, do you have a picture you can share?

Cheers

No, they're the ones that look the same as standard lamps except the indicator part is white/clear.

I work in the parts dept. of a BMW/MINI dealership and haven't heard of the new white ones you refer to. Mind you, they would make sense.

I'll see if I can find anything out.

I didn't have the extra seal you are talking about Ratty but i removed from the old ones and used on the new light (slowly remove)

I was worried like yourself about possible leaks if there was no seal but reusing the seal has kept the water out.

The rear lights I purchased from CTD had the foam bit on as you describe, just like the standard lights.

Steve,

I finally received the complete description. They are the ones you have - red with the indicator clear. Now available through Mini in Oz as an alternative to the all clear ones.

Cheers

That would explain why I can't find any information on them then. Thanks for letting me know.

(As an idea though, I think it's sound)

Yes, why not? Clear areas over all of the bulb areas, with the original red reflector surround. CTD, or anyone else on the supply side listening?

Cheers,

I bought some clear light recently and mine also did not have the second seal (near the leans area) fitted. I checked this with the dealer and he said it was correct. They checked the Mini parts list and it did show this other thicker seal as a seperate option but it was not available. My Cooper S is July 03 build and had this second seal fitted but I have installed the new clear lights as they came and did not bother to try to remove the second seal from the original lights. My guess is that they have been fitting an addtional seal in the factory because of water penetration problems on some cars (just a guess).

So far no problems with any water penetration on my S as far as I can tell.

Dinlo, my dealer referred to this as a rear lamp gasket and the part number is 63216938600, the price quoted was £3.15

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

J
