Scotland Chequered roof......

I was wondering if anyone out there could tell me what the dimensions are for the squares on the chequered roof? Its just that I have got someone who can supply me with the squares for my car for a very good price (fit myself). He needs to know the dimensions, because he is only making them in the one colour/color to go with the black roof (so dont need black squares).

Any help would be much appreciated thank you

The chequered decal is not made up of just squares.
The front, side and rear are shaped to follow the roofs edge.

I can`t remember the exact measurments, the inner squares are close to 220mm.

How much is cheap? becareful of cheap vinyl, it can srink within 6 months after fitting. You really need 7 year quality.

Kev idlegear.

It`s a mini thing, you wouldn`t understand.

I think it is a matter of personal taste - there is no Checker Police that I know of.

I had llight silver ones done for my DS/W MCS in a smaller than factory size. I like the way it loks (see my gallery) but if you want them bigger, or smaller, go for it. You aalso neet to decide whther to go edge to edge or in a sqaure like mine.

Very nice Gordon, I like your car. I am/was thinking of getting chrome squares made, but my supplier says that the only chrome stuff they have is for interior use only but can be put outside if I wanted but would only last maybe a maximum of 6 months!! He also showed me a silver vinyl he had which he said was the regular outside stuff...

But I would still REALLY like chrome, because It would be different.

Zimbo

glad you like the car - at all of the meets I've done so far I am the only one with non-factory checks and also the only checkered stripes.

I am not totally stuck onthe checkered stripes and toy with changing them but havn't made up my mind.

On the chrome I'm surprised that there isn't something that will stand up to the weather - althought all of those Hars (spelling?) could probably peel a banana. have you checked the 3M site? They probably have the best quality stull.

Sorry if I'm going (a little) of topic with this question (I didn't want to open a new topic).
I saw an internet site (shop) which sold chequered roof decals in white(/transparant) & body colour(BRG). The only one I can find now is one where they ask 249usd for it. The one I found was a lot cheaper (around 50 pounds). Does anyone know which site?

Thanks,

Fly.

Go to idlegear.co.uk, email Kev through the site. He's got the knowledge you're looking for.

I am another big fan of Kev at IdleGear.co.uk

For ~US$74.00 I got a silver checkered kit from him that I fitted on my black roof that has a sunroof, with excellent results. If no sunroof is involved, it would be a breeze to do. With all the extra trimming it took me about 3 hours start to finish if I remember correctly.

Check my gallery for close up detail pics.

(and no run-ins with the checkapolice either )

BartMack, your car is looks really nice!! That silver checkered kit you got, what exactly does it contain? My car is the same as yours with a sunroof and I want to put checks on it, but will only need the silver/chrome squares because the roof is already black...

Was it easy enough for you to do on your own?

Zimbo, the kit had pre cut individual silver decal squares (meaning front edge. front rounded corners, & back tapered squares, plus all the middle squares with 1 extra justincase square)
a template for the MINI roof, a squeegee, & clear instructions written in proper English

The kit is NOT pre-cut for a sunroof (!) I traced/embossed the sunroof outline with a rounded pencil eraser and then cut with scissors and a steady hand. You spray them with water first which lets you reposition them easily. It takes patience and a good eye for geometry to do-it-yourself with a sunroof, then you just take your time.

With a sunroof, if you are unsure you can do it, you should get someone experienced to do it for you. I am basically the adventurous type when it comes to projects I haven't done before

(and thank you, by the way!! )

Tho not the best pic (window reflection and all) this is a good top view..

Bartmack - like that a lot, particularly the black spoiler. I have a white roof so have a white spoiler and mirrors. With hindsight i would have been better with the black rook and put the checkers on that

well someone on MINI2 got a kit with small checks and installed it all the way around the sunroof, leaving the sunroof normal. It looked very cool and it was unique! (I don't remember who exactly, only that I really liked it!) there was an old thread that I started when I did my car in August, and the guy posted in there.
Come to think of it I had done a poll and the MINI2-ers convinced me to go with silver instead of white (boy am I glad I asked!! )
you could try searching that out to see the pic if it is still accessible.
Bart
