Offline | I was getting mixed up - those ones don't come on a heatsink. We've got some others that are a ceramic substrate and they come mounted on a heatsink. Don't remember who makes the ceramic ones though. |

Offline | John, I got them from Mini Design, ( www.mini-design.com ) I seem to remember they were £25. As I said before, I would definately spend the extra to get PIAA leds, as the others I had were not reliable, I have these on all the time I drive the car, and ive now had them for about 8 months with no problems. |

Offline | Thread revival! ![]() Are the PIAA LEDs still going strong? I'm looking for something to match my xenons. Currently I have these and while they're okay, they give a very narrow/intense light that does not appear to get dispersed as well as the PIAA option. I have not described this very well. I'll get a pic. ![]() Back soon. ![]() |

Offline | Back. And with pics...![]() ![]() I don't like how the sidelight is so defined, rather than the light being dispersed more evenly. Man, am I making sense?! Also, the LEDs I have are a bit bluer than the xenons, which is not ideal either. Any clues? |

Offline | Yah, thats the problem im having too. No matter what kind of bulb i use, or what color, none of them seem to light up the entire bulb housing like the OEM ones used to. Even the same type of bulb but different color doesnt work as wel as the OEM ![]() |

Offline | I think the problem is that the sidelight housing is not reflective inside. As LED's are directional, you might be able to get a better spread of light by diffusing them, as this way the light is not projected but is just presented (perfect for sidelights). This'd be best achieved by actually "frosting" the sidelight/indicator housing - but that'd be ugly. You could also try actually diffusing the LED slightly by "roughing" it up with a bit of sandpaper, rather than the clear standard epoxy dome - this does help the light be less directional. |

Offline | ![]() Well, I have to find an alternative now, I was pulled over by a cop today and given an official warning that my sidelights are illegal on account of their blue tinge and if I get busted with them again within the next 12 months I will automatically be given an on the spot fine of $102. The hunt contimues then... |

| MINI2 Newbie | I was thinking of getting some LED sidelights for my mini to go with my xenon headlights, just because the standard sidelights look so yellow. but having been through this thread and some others, the last thing i want its to get pulled over because my Sidelights are slightly Blue all i want to do is take the yellow tint out of the light and have a more White looking light. so one option which i may experiment with is the use of colour correction gels used in theatre and TV. these gels are very slightly tinted to correct the output of curtain types of bulbs. has anyone tried this option or am i just talking rubbish (be honest please) also, not having looked at the bulb or its housing would it be possible???? Cheers. |

Offline | Gel Well to be honest, working in theater, I know that even with MR-16 Lamps, (the little ones with the reflector built in you find mostly in IKEA type lights) Gel burns at that close of a range to a bulb. And I would think that there is no way for air to circulate between the Gel and the Bulb so you'd end up with a melted burnt mess. It is a good idea and does work sometimes, but the heat would be too great. The only time I had luck using Gel on a car was on the foggiest day I ever remember here in Pittsburgh, you honestly couldnt see 6 feet infront of your car. I had my old buick century and happened to have some yellowish green Gel in my car, so i pulled over, dried off a bit of space around the highbeams and hood, gaffer taped on the gel to the outside of the car, and BAM, when I used my high beams, I could see alot further, and if another car came around I just shut them off and suffered with my lowbeams till they passed. Worked brilliantly, although my co-workers made fun of me for a bit, but hey, I could see. Does anyone have any pictures of pre-installed LED fixtures for the MINI? I've only seen pictures of them installed. 2004 MINI Cooper, Red and White bonnet stripes, Cold Weather Package |

Offline | Have you seen the Philips Blue Vision bulbs that places like www.powerbulbs.co.uk give away with an order..? I got them when I ordered the indicator blubs that don't look yellow when they're off. They have a slight blue tint to them when they're off (but probably much less that a stage gel) and they look white when they're on. The police over here in the US seem much less worried about things like that, so I don't know if they'd upset the UK plod, but probably not, they're pretty subtle. |
