United-States Rear Fog Light Retrofit?

I see that rear fog lights are now an option on the MINIUSA website. It seems like the petition worked! Does anyone have any info so we can DIY? Sorry if this has been discussed before, I searched the archives and only found instructions to make the rear fog lights act as extra brake lights. TIA

You can install the toggle yourself ($75 list), all the wiring and connections are in place already. However, only the dealer can activate the lights. They have to update the computer so that it knows that the lights are present. No DIY way around this part.

jlivingoods excellent instructions.

Simple job, took me maybe 30 minutes. I have an appointment to have mine turned on next Wed. Weasels won't tell me how much they'll charge though
You'll have to make sure you get the correct P/N.

Had mine done this week by the dealer and frankly, I wouldn't even bother installing the hardware yourself as the whole thing ran $75 for the parts and 1/2 hour of labor. Interesting fact is that they had a 2004 "S" in the showroom with the new three-spoke wheel and rear fog lights, which were a $100 option. Given that price from the factory on the new cars, the retrofit cost really is pretty fair.

I understand that the dealers are trying to charge 1 1/2 hours for labor, but once I mentioned the retrofit bulletin from MINIUSA (which noted a .5 labor time), they honoured it. You can print it out from a different thread on MINI2. I looked for it to link but couldn't find it - sorry!

As an aside, the new steering wheel looks much better in person.

I take it you had yours installed at Flow? After the fiasco I had with both Checkered Flag and the Richmond dealer, I might drive down to NC for my rear fogs.

Hi April - Yup - went to Flow. Ask for Dan Zipkin to do the job as he's a seriously knowledgable and nice guy.

Please let me know how much they charge you. I already have the full switch bank installed and just need them activated. I've been too busy lately to schedule an appointment to have it done, but would like to soon.

My dealer charged $67.50 to activate--a half hour labor charge (Bay Area prices are high!)....I already had it installed, so I don't know what they would have charged to install it....

This'll be my second set of wiper blades as well. All 3 this time. They don't last worth doo doo. I'm hoping they're free again.

Wiper blades are free for the life of your warranty, I get mine changed whenever I'm near the dealer whether they need it or not!

Your labor costs sound about right. MINI of Sterling charged $140 plus tax for the switch and installation. $75 for the switch plus $65 for the labor...

Hi Chip - The total labour charge (to install the toggle panel and activate the lights) was $47.50 representing .5 hour. As I noted earlier, the service writer had it down for 1.5 hours, but I mentioned the "Mini Aftersales Parts Bulletin" reflecting the .5 labor time which was honored with no problem. The whole thing took just under that time so it seems about right.

Curt
Just got back from having mine done this morning. Had v36 installed and new wiper blades put on too.

They charged me $46. Not bad. Took a while to explain what I wanted but they did get it done. Cheaper than I thought.

did they do it without changing any previous memory settings? I learned to make sure before leaving the dealership, the hard way

Yea I mentioned that on another thread.

All my options were gone. I asked them to make sure they were reprogrammed before they started the work but that didn't happen.
Told them they missed the comfort opening and auto door lock. Got the car back and they'd forgotten the auto door lock

Fogs worked nicely though

I have to say I'm impressed. I expected my dealer to toast the earlier programming when they did the install, but they reset everything the way I had it...
