Sticking on roof decals by yourself

Has anyone stuck the roof decals on themselves? I ask because it's a £95 cost for most of the stickers and yet they charge nearly £300 to buy and fit and I think that's a bit of a liberty... Okay I'm a cheapskate but it could mean another £200 for beer???

oo - oo, I did that!
was last August or early September, there is a whole thread somehere in exterior that chronicles the process, and some close-up pics. Check my gallery too.
I thoroughly reccommend IdleGear.co.uk -- (Kev Beck)

Good luck! Bart

yep i stuck my checkered roof on myself & it wan't difficult at all, you just need to set yourself out properly & take time. Mine was a kit from IdleGear as well which included a template, instructions & a squeegee blade. all i needed to add (in best Blue Peter tradition) was water

overall cost - £40-ish for the kit & a couple of hours of my time which would have otherwise been spent on here probably

As others have said, it's not difficult. Just take your time and not rush. It took me 6 hours to put on the Union Jack decal. Could have done it a lot faster, but I wanted to line up everything perfectly and intall without any air bubbles.

A couple of pointers. Use lots of water. It will ensure the decals are free to move about until you are ready to squeegee the decal down. It also tend to minimize chance of air bubbles. Also be careful when working on curves at edge of roof. Particularly at the front and rear edge and corners where the roof curves both fore-aft and left right. The decal being a flat sheet of vinyl only curves one way, so you kind of have to caress it to fit the compound curves of the roof without crease. If you find the decal won't conform to the roof in these tricky areas try gently squeegee the decal as it becomes drier and stickier.

Good luck.

This link is a part of the "unofficial" installation procedure: Roof Decal Installation

Although I've not used this myself, I thought that it might be helpful...good luck!

...or maybe I just didn't understand the question...

It's easy! Just think, you get 4 attempts for the same price as having BMW fit it for you.

I thought I heard the words "decals" and "beer" being entered on a keyboard.

Go here:

http://www.mini2.com/forum/exterior/37125-tips-bonnet-stripes-application.html

Details out the bonnet application, do the same for the roof.

I got my stripes and cheques from Kev at Idlegear.......he's the king of this stuff as far as I'm concerned. Excellent product, excellent price. And he's a good guy, too.

Fitted my UJ roof myself.

Took me about an hour with a mate helping.

I did used to fit vinyls as part of my job a few years ago though.

There's no way I was going to pay the dealer the sort of money they wanted to fit it for me.

They looked amazed when I said I was fitting it myself!

Very, very impressed with IdleGear, I ordered the stripe yesterday morning and it turned up before 9:30 this morning! Fantastic service!!

I'm glad to see there are a few people that have attempted this, I'm not quite so worried now.

I'm glad your going to do it yourself. I have done mine myself also. You may be able to see a pic of it on my gallery.

It took me and my dad to do it in about 1 hour.

Union Jack in 11 pieces. It was in 11 individual pieces but they were stuck on a backing sheet all together in the right place.

It was allot easier than i thought, All though i dont my window tints with my dad to save on the dealer prices and they turnt out ok aswell.

See gallery for pics.

Thanks, Hope this helps

Yep, they're the best there is. If you're real happy go here:

http://www.mini2.com/forum/a/

and post the praise. Kev treated me well when I was making a minor purchase from him a year or so ago (about $110.00), and I contacted him recently about the possibility of a sponsorship on an event we're having......he was (don't tell him this) way too generous with his reply.

Excellent product, better than excellent service, overall nice guy.

Post the praise.

Hmmmm...

I'm interested in getting a silver UJ and silver bonnet stripes for my car.....

I rang my dealer and they quoted £160 just for parts....I asked about the cost for fitting....they recommended the people they use, but having it done independently from the dealer.....so....I rang the fitters....they quoted £50 for fitting the OE graphics, or £135 + VAT for their own in the same design.....I think this may be a no-brainer....!!!!!

Right then chaps and chapettes, we got our car last weekend and set about fitting the flag almost straight away. Not quite as easy as I would have liked but after a while and a fair bit of marking, smoothing, reapplying and trimming we managed it.

Thanks to everyone for their support!! Everyone should stop buying the BMW ones and fit them themselves, if I can do it anyone can!
