Offline | WOW!! Those Mini Xenon HID replacement bulbs are not cheap! I was looking through my owners manual today and could not find any info on what type of Xenon HID (high intensity discharge) bulb our Mini's use. I am very impressed with the brightness of my Xenon's and would highly recommend them. Other drivers on the freeway actually signal before merging in front of me! The owner manual simply states the fact they should last the life of the car and not be turned on and off unnecessarily. After researching the subject, I believe our Mini's with the Xenon HID option use a 35w 4200k D2S HID bulb. Not found at the local auto parts store, that's for sure! A new bulb runs right around $150. Yes, that's $300 for a new pair of bulbs. I am curious if anybody has installed a pair of these Philips Ultinon 6000k HID Xenon lamps? They burn a bluish/purple color as opposed to the factory Mini bulb which burns white. I left this hyperlink http://faq.auto.light.tripod.com/hl-hid-bulbs.htm as I believe it' the best you will find on the Xenon headlamp subject. It is filled with great HID facts and technical information. Enjoy !!!!!!!!! Offline | Well you also have to remember that MINI says the manual transmission fluid is a lifetime fluid. There's no way I'm keeping that in for more than 50k miles. Anyway, HID's don't have fillaments so they might very well last longer than the car. The main problem for these bulbs is heat that builds up if there's a smudge on the bulb. The heat produced by an HID is high enough to crack the tempered glass bulb so they have to operate in very clean conditions. If something gets on one of the heat exchangers for the bulb, it might insulate the heat and break the bulb. |
