United-States 3 Driving Lights?

Has anyone mounted 3 driving lights on a light bar? The original Italian Job Movie had two small lights with a larger one in the middle.

On the little trading cards that Mini issued, they even show a "cartoon" image of a similar setup.

I am guessing that this was a popular style used in rallies of the past? It seems to me that the weight might be an issue, but I like the look. Wondering if there are any photos of this.

people do 4 so weight wouldn't be an issue, especially bar mounted.

its something me and mate were looking into doing as a mod last year, couldn't find anyone with the bar to fit the MINI but there are bars for the classic to do this. Its to replicate the Original IJ film look.

The only way I could find was a bit costly, involved getting a custom bar made, then sourcing some classic looking lights, wiring, etc... So we never did it in the end.

Good luck in trying to do this, it could look the business

The only problem I have is knowing which one to drive?

the closest i've seen is 4 spots, but with the middle 2 mounted slightly higher on the grille to give a downturned mouth appearance. it looked really good but nothing like what you are describing. i'm not sure if the 3 spot cofiguration would be road legal - i always thought that spots had to be mounted as pairs of equal height in so's not to confuse oncoming traffic?

ps yes, a 4 spot setup is very heavy & requires extra strong bonnet struts fitting

Thanks for the replies.

I believe that the legal issue depends on location. Here, in the good old United State of Texas, it appears that you can have "a spotlight", and up to three "other driving lights".

Of course, it also says that you should have a tag on the front, and you don't typically get pulled over for not having one.

Also, I've noticed that some of the light kits come with one fog light, and one driving light, which would presumably not be on at the same time.

Correct. Post 1972 cars must have spots and fogs mounted in pairs, one on either side of the car. There are actually specifics on the distances apart and height for mounting too.

It was acceptable in the 80's

Unless one of them is in the middle.... isn't it?

Should be illegal, it's so people dont miss bikes in the dark. That's good in my book.

MCS and RSV!

Paddy Hopkirks Monte Carlo car had a huge one on the roof as well - now THAT would be totally illegal these days...

Hopkirk's steering wheel would be illegal, too. We have to have cushioned steering wheels and dashes so we don't hurt ourselves. Seems to me the laws are working up to the point when we just climb into the car and it drives itself -- just so we don't hurt ourselves.
