Lightbulb Alta Rally Light Bar or MINI Sport Light Lamp Bar

Which Light Bar do you like better? The Alta, the MINI Sport ot the MINI factory driving lights?

I got the MINI Sport Lamp Bar on my MINI and it look Great. My girlfriend now wants to have a light bar on hers too.

If she get the MINI Sport, it will look just like mine, which is good, but Alta one look more like the classic mini we have.

What do you think? Thanks

sorry dinlo, it's a photoshop image i threw together to see what it'd look like! i'll let you know if i ever go through with it!

ps. having done a bit of country driving, i'd suggest the lower mounted alta kit would be at exactly the right height for stone chips & shattered lights... so i'd be wary, & probably get some clear vinyl protection for them if i had them installed!

Well, I'm a big proponent of having as much light as you can, but I do have some questions concerning this set up:

What about heating & cooling? Assuming you run 8 lights in that set up (four on top, four on the bottom), will enough air for cooling make it into the ducts?

What about the load on the electrical system? In my experiences with rallying (all of which are pretty unremarkable, but it DID give me an appreciation for having as much light as I could get), usually the alternator/generator would have to be up-rated to handle the power requirements of multiple lights.

And I know it's been covered, but rock damage would also be a concern for the lower rack. Although that could be obviated by running clear film or covers.

As always, your feedback is appreciated.

Dinlo,

Got some questions for you:

Running your 4 light set up, have you ever tried a worse case scenario/max power test? That is, where you duplicate the heaviest load you can throw on the electrical system.

For example, say you were on a road, late at night, in the rain and it's cold. could you turn on the heater fan full blast, have the wipers going, AND have all the lights on, including your rack of four, without adversely affecting the battery/alternator?

Thanks,

TBSF

Hi TBSF

Honestly I don't use the light much. So I'm not sure what is the load on the battery. But I can try can let you know later, I can turn on the A/C to max with radio on, and turn on all the lights and see is there any different

United-States Your Lights

Where are your lights from? Are they based on switches or connected to brights?

Just picked up this thread. Fancy getting the quad spot set up from Mini Sport (the picture at top of this thread, and on the back page advert in Go Mini magazine. How easy is it to fit; does it rattle a) at all, b) much, c) like hell.
Is there much room behind the lamp bar to clean the grille? doesn't look like it.
Any advice welcomed.

I've got the MiniSport setup (pic of my car is a few posts above yours).

To answer your questions...

It doesn't rattle at all - absolutely rock solid! No wobbling of the lights, and the bar feels strong enough to tow another car with

Fitting isn't that hard, but is involved. Youll need to remove the front bumper skin to get to the big frame behind, remove that, and drill a hole in it. You'll also need to trim the top lip of the bumper skin slightly - but don't worry, the bit that needs trimming is usually hidden by the bonnet/hood anyway, and with the lamp bar in place, it just looks 'right'.
Wiring is fairly easy too. It took me around a day to do it, but then, with one arm paralyzed, it takes me longer to do everything anyway!

Clearance to the grill is Ok - you can get in there to clean.

Let me know if you want pics of the clearance, and/or the cut part of the bumper skin lip.

Thanks punkeyfunky. If you can pass on the photos, without any trouble then please do. I'm off to the Mini in the Park, Silverstone this sept, so hopefully Minisport will be there so I can see the lamps, and others, to compare. The quad lights seem better value for money than the BMW ones- the garage wants £400 to supply and fit just two.
I'm not too keen on doing the fitting myself .I know a man that can but I don't want to impose on him too much.
