Should my Union Jack have this hole?

Hi All,

Can anyone help with curious problem. I've had the BMW silver / grey Union Jack fitted by my local dealer who have done a grand job in applying it. However there is a strange hole cut into the vinyl about an inch behind the aerial dead centre of the cross and vaguely resembles a question mark in shape. Its obviously not damage as it has been perfectly laser cut and measures about 6mm x 4mm. (sorry no piccie). I asked the dealer what it was but the fitter had left for the day. I'm just curious as to what its for. I wasnt entirely happy as it spoils the look of the cross. The dealer has ordered a replacement UJ and the car is booked in to have it replaced next week. Has anyone encountered this problem?

Cheers,

Tim

No, sounds like maybe the cut out for the antenna has been misplaced?

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the reply. Yes I think you could be right. Looking at it again its more like 1cm or so behind the aerial base. I guess the fitter has placed the whole cross slightly further back than he should have done. It makes sense now as i guess the hole is for the aerial cable to go through. Next question is......how easy is it to remove the vinyl without scratching/damaging the roof??....easily I hope!!.....will find out as the car booked in again next Thurs to have the UJ removed and replaced.

cheers

hi,

does the hole look something like the attached picture?

if so, it is the new mark to show it is an official MINI product:
-----Snip-----
We're pleased to announce that the entire new range of MINI roof decals is now available to order.

You'll notice that quite a few changes have been made to the new designs; we've introduced a range of designs that fit the entire roof of MINI and have also made them easier to install. This has been achieved in a number of ways:

We've reduced the amount of vinyl covering difficult corners of MINI's roof.
MINI decals will be supplied in three or five pieces, wherever possible, to ensure they're more manageable for installation.
Aerial alignment squares will be provided to align the roof decal correctly on MINI's roof, they're either pre-cut or printed on the decal for removal.
We've kept vinyl away from the aerial base as much as possible so as to allow MINI's with navigation aerials to have decals fitted without the need to remove the aerial itself.
We've also inserted a small trademark on the back of the MINI decals to authenticate that they're original MINI roof decals.

-----snip-----

Regards
Stephen

Indeed, just been to have a look at a 2 tone silver UJ in the box. it has that mark cut into the vinyl, just behind the aerial.

penguinblue...if you have another one fitted, it will have the same mark.

Small mark cut in the vinyl as a trademark.... Anyone else suspicious that the Aerial might be moving with the facelift?

the facelift aerial is larger than the current one, but in the same position.

but trust me, that is a trade mark!

Sounds a bit grim to me.

Hmmm, maybe I should just go for a white roof after all...

Hi Minty,

Thanks for your reply and advice. Yes the Pic you have posted is exactly the shape that appears on my flag behind the aerial. It seems an odd thing to do to put a kinda of kite mark which is cut into the vinyl. As you say it is small but I do think it spoils the overall affect a little as I have a nice silver cross part to the flag with this hole showing the black roof through it. Oh well there we go, just want to say I can't thank you enough for your advice, it's put my mind at rest. The thought of the car going back in and having the UJ removed is making the hairs stand up on the back of my neck. I haven't actually paid for the UJ that has been fitted as my dealer thinks it's possible a faulty flag. I will pop into the dealer tomorrow and point this out with them and cancel the booking to have the UJ replaced. It sounds like the dealer might not be aware of this change ie kite mark being added to the flags!!

Cheers,

hi, if you tell your dealer to check the MINI infonet, they will find all the information.

from what i understand, they started putting the mark on them after they had a problem with some roof graphics bubbling....possibley not official roof graphics. so now it is easy to tell if you have a proper roof, or a fake.
