| MINI2 Regular | Color coding wheel archers, sideskirts and front and rear spoilers` YEs this is another question about color coding.. I went to 2 panel beaters to ask them a quote for color coding these items. What I found out, they have different ways of doing it. I want the arches and spoilers to look exactly the same as the body colour, hence no textures at all. okay, one is saying that they have to sand the plastic before they even start to spray primers onto them. then they spray them with paint. the other is saying the parts do not have to be sanded, coz if sanded, there will be marks. So what they'll do is spray the plastic parts with a special plastic primer, then apply 2 layers of paint. Before applying the 2nd layer, they'll wait after the 1st one dries. Any comments on which one gives the better result? |

Offline | i hv not done the color coordinated side skirts yet but i know ppl have... and they told me u need to sand it cuze of the texture on the surface of the plastic bits.. if u look at the aero side skirts you'd see they have no texture... and if you look at the ones u have now on your car they do have texture.. and it does require sanding if you want a good job done.. otherwise the paint will chip and peel alot easier 03 Dark Silver MCS w/ White roof |

| #1647 of 1960 | mine are being installed right now, as I post. I think they did all of the above, tho they may have sprayed a primer before the first sanding. I believe they got 2 coats of primer, each sanded, and then 2 coats of paint, each wet sanded & polished. the result looks as smooth as the car body ![]() less sanding would produce what they call "orange peel" texture, which is somewhat okay if economy is a big issue. I actually bought a new (loose) set of trim foe the shop to paint, and they are switching the pieces out. I'll have some pics in my thread late today ![]() ps- it's also very important that they use a flex additive in the primer/paint to keep the paint from chipping or popping off of the plastic! |
