AfterMarket Chrome Scoop -UPDATE- Now Fitted

Has anyone gone & bought any of the aftermarket Chrome Scoops for their MCS.
I had my old MCS`s Scoop Chromed as a One Off experimental Job a while back,
See .. http://www.mini2.com/forum/general-discussion/39050-chromed-scoop-1st.html
But due to a bit of over-enthusiastic Cleaning , I am now looking into what has become available from aftermarket suppliers recently for my new MCS.

MINISPARES are doing one for £245 +vat
http://www.minispares.com/Product.aspx?pid=34801

NEW-MINI-PARTS are doing a complete Scoop for 390 Euros (around £245 +vat ??)
& a Chromed Scoop COVER for 80 Euros (around £50)
http://www.new-mini-parts.de/shop_e/index.php

while MINISPEEDs version is £60 +vat
http://shop2.minispeed.co.uk/new_min...89&id=hv-min01

Are there any other companies supplying Chrome Scoops ??
Whats the difference between them ??
.. & why the Large price differentials ??

Just a quick comment really. Saw the Minispeed 'chrome' bonnet scoop at Mini45 -Silverstone at the weekend. It seems to be plastic, which would make it cheaper.
It did look good though. Any idea how the scoops are fitted, as I may get the minispeed one.

Hi David, Great to know I`m not alone in my Chrome Scoop Quest

Removing your original Scoop & Fitting a replacement is very easy & takes around 10 minutes. The first pic below should open up to give an animated sequence of events.

I originally bought a "Primer Finished" replacement from BMW for around £35 & sent it away to be Chromed, which is not an easy task as Ideally the Plastic should be ABS for good chemical bonding, & Not Poly-Carbonate as is the Original.

Did you get to handle the Scoop from MINISPEED or get a good look at it ??
I`d be grateful of any comments you may have about its Quality & Finish.

Thanks
Martin

I had a shuffty at it.......it's got a lattice grille over the intake duct.......both Charger_Pete and me made the same comment, that it would reduce the area open to airflow by around 30-40%......not what your intercooler needs!

Finish was "a bit plasticy", but it looked OK.........but not like the original chrome scoopy that you had done for you Martin.......don't know about the others.........maybe you get what you pay for....?? Although 250 biggies is a lot of dosh for what it is!

Minispeed's scoop is plasticky, but no more than the plastics on the original car.
The last comment about the lattice and air intake reduction seems to be a fair point. Don't know if air intake is compromised or not. A smaller opening area would cause the air to rush in quicker than normal, would it not. Does it not then become an issue with the filter coping with the increase in pressure? Is the variance neglible?
Thanks for the pictures on the last but one thread.

Hi,

I have a chrome scoop bought from Mini Spares at Potters Bar.

Cost £250.00.

I like it a lot.

Hi Thornef,
Would be great if you could show pics of the Scoop, either Before of after Fitment.
Did you notice at all if it was a Genuine BMW Scoop that had been Plated, (by the info "stamped" on its Underside), or was independently produced ??

Thanks

Restyle, I too am on the quest for the chrome hood scoop. Prices in the USA vary quite like what you posted....

recently a member posted on the other board who has had two different chrome scoops, and he actually liked the inexpensive one quite well, which now has me thinking ...maybe???

his post is here http://www.northamericanmotoring.com...ad.php?t=30612

Let's hear what you decide!

Hey REstyle, I'm cleaning up my thread subscriptions and here you are!

Did you ever get a chrome scoop, and if so, what did you get and how do you like it? Did you get a hands on peek at any along the way? Please post any info you have, I'm still vaguely searching....

Hi Jmoser, Its all still up in the air
No decisions have been made yet, but I`m still on the look out for one.
I see that as well as the companies mentioned in the first post, a few others are now supplying Chrome Scoops...

MiniSport @ £271-
http://www.minisport.com/new-mini-sh...e-product.html

Euro Car Parts @ £52.85
http://www.eurocarparts.com/

Plminishop.com @ £265-
https://www.plminishop.com/view_prod...roduct=NMA1100

I havn`t been able to get to many shows this year, & so not seen any of these Close up.
Therefore, Any feedback by anyone who have fitted ANY aftermarket Scoop / Scoop Cover is Welcome .... including the Carbon Fibre types

Well, I thought I`d treat myself for Christmas, So yesterday I Fitted the Chrome Scoop Cover supplied by MINISPEED
{Who also gave me a nice 10% discount with my MINI2 Privilege Membership }

Although it comes with strips of 3M tape around its edges, I also put some Silicon Mastik within this area to ensure good adhesion.

I didnt want to stick it to my Original Hyper Blue Scoop, so it went on my old prototype Chrome Scoop ...After being thoughoughly depainted & degreased.

Overall impression is that it looks great, as long as you dont look Too close at the edges, as you can then see the white plastic of the original beneath.
I`ll get a touch up paint pen to go over this area shortly.

Great Job Restyle! Looks great, and reasonably priced too! Using a backup scoop is a good idea...my chrome scoop mission is revived, set by your blinding example!

Loved the snow blow job ditty too

Well, I just bought the chrome scoop overlay:

http://www.mossmini.com/Shop/ViewPro...eIndexID=44505

I'm not real impressed with this one as it has double-sided tape to keep the scoop in place (rather than the OEM scoop, which as screws). Also, I had to put 2 extra layers of tape to get it to actually stick to the hood. We'll see how long it stays connected to the hood.

If anyone knows where I can get a chrome scoop just like the OEM scoop (affixes with screws), hit me up with an email: jeremseda@hotmail.com.

Hi Jeremy, Sorry to hear you dont like your Scoop Cover.
It seems all the "Chrome Cover" versions are stuck onto an original scoop with double sided tape.
Is it this method that you dislike, or are there other problems with yours ??

I see that one of MINI2`s sponsors -MINIMANIA- supply a complete {screw on) Chrome Scoop unit in your part of the World.
They are more expensive at $500, but I guess you get what you pay for

Just spotted these Chrome Scoops on ebay with a Buy-it-now price of only £23.99
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...ayphotohosting

Looks very similar to the Scoop Cover I eventually bought,
but they mention its "2 Piece" ??

Seems like a bargain though
