Offline | Adding Two Extra Lamps I have the MC40 with two driving lamps. Here are my questions: I want four driving lamps so what I would want to do is use the existing wiring to the factory lamps to switch a relay to fire up four spots (thus avoiding the "you will overload your wiring by fitting extra lamps" argument. There is a "hot" cable under the hood that is fed from the batery in the rear and it should have plenty of juice for 4 lamps (with proper fuse and wiring of course). Has anyone used the existing lamp brackets to support a lamp bar for 4 lamps? Can I get two extra factory brackets for the additional lamps and how difficult is it to fit them? Should I ditch the standard brackets and get aftermarket ones? If so any recomendations? Any recomendations on driving lamps to replace the standard MINI ones as IMHO the standard lamps are a little too small? I remember the big Lucas SFT700 and SLR700 lamps back in my rallying days and they looked the business. Thanks for any help. Alan Alan 2004 MC40 |

Offline | Lamp brackets - UK experience I too have looked at this solution of using 4 brackets and decided that it is possible. Also somewhere on here ( mini2) there were some pictures of an MCS in USA with 4 lights on OEM brackets, just don't ask me where ! You can buy lamp brackets( complete with rivets and additional anti-bounce threaded bars ) in the UK for £25 the pair ( say $45 ) and fixing them is relatively straight forward - line them up ( almost where you fancy along the slot in the grill- the instructions give precise measurements but are difficult to interpret as they are line drawings ), just taking care that in certain positions the top fixing point of the bracket may not be tight against the inner bonnet ( hood) skin and so may have to be moved left or right until it does. The holding to mark or pilot drill the 3 holes is best done with a friend to hold the bracket whilst you drill - too much pressure and you could not only drill through the inner skin, but the top one too which is about 0.75" behind. I slipped a small piece of 0.5" ply behind to stop it as I had no friends handy at the time !) Then its just a case of sealing the drilled holes to prevent corrosion and riveting the bracket on. I am in the process of trying to get some brushed ( 30 - 50mm ish ) aluminium tube bent as per the Mini front bumper and attaching that to the 2 OEM brackets I have already, and then as you say mounting 2 more lamps on that. The problem is that as initially I only want one made it looks like it could work out quite expensive I can get you a photo showing inside the grill tomorrow when its stopped raining if you want . |
