Optimum Tyres for 17" and 16" Wheels

I know this has been discussed before, but I cant find the relevant thread....

Im running the standard 15" wheels at the moment, rim diameter is 381mm, tyre aspect is 114mm, for a 175/65 X 15....question is, what size tyre is optimum for 17" rim?? 205/45 seems to be 92mm, giving overall 523mm, an overall diameter increase of 28mm......is this the standard S spoke tyre??

Whats the standard tyre on 16" rims? I thought it was 195/60 = 117mm, plus 406 mm = 503mm, close, but an 8mm, almost 2% increase......

Are my figures wrong ??

195/55R16 is the standard 16" tire size.

Very wide and very low profile tyres do not neccessarily equate to better handling. Handling is of course subjective, but the designer of the Mini's front axle said "I think the sweetest-handling Mini was one with smallest tyres" referring to the standard 15" tyres.

Grip of course is another matter - they should provide (even) more grip, at least on a smooth surface.

well I would have guessed that the to get the best out of the MINI you would have to have 17's (but thats just my opinion) the only thing Im worried about is that once they are fitted, is the car going to look higher??

does anyone know what the difference edge to edge diameter between the 195/55/16 and 215/35/18???

that would give me some idea if the car is going to be higher......

The big difference in handling won't be 16' or 17' wheels. It wil be the tires you choose...tread width, construction, shore hardness. Go to the Tirerack site, pick out a tire and view "tire specs." That will list all the tires of that model with their diameter, suggested wheel width, cross section, tread width and revs per mile. You will find a lot of tires in the 23.5 to 24.5 inch range in all kinds of wheel sizes.

Cooper S Red/White/White, Air, Computer, Cloth, DSC, Cold Weather. August build.
