| #1647 of 1960 | LED tail lights I've seen some threads before where people have tried LEDs in the tail lights and they didn't fill the reflector with light as the LEDs all point forward... but I think these bulbs are new as they have backward aimed LEDs to fill up the reflector. Has anyone tried these yet? (the 24LED wide angle 1157 & 1156) LINK --scroll down |

It's quite a good site though isn't it. Lots of choice and reasonably priced I thought. Let me know how quick delivery is, if you don't mind. Thanks ![]() All Black MCS |

Offline | Doh! Good point. I saw these a while ago (then looked at them as I was working out what to do with the clear fog light!) and they do look good, and I can't understand why these cant be road legal (and if the police would even bother you for it?). | i'm the dude! | just a word of warning, they are ok for use at night, but during the day, they are VERY hard to see. I had them on my car for like 2 days, i had to take them off. Its cool cause it matches the high brake light, but it doesn't work as well, because LEDs are meant to be directed towards something, not reflected. The other problem is is that with the 1157 type style, the brightness difference between the brakes and the running lights is very minimal. |

| #1647 of 1960 | well, I went ahead and ordered a set of these for the tail lights on my 05.... the good news is that the backfill LEDs really do fill up the reflector with light, and for running lights they look fantastic. A big improvement over previous LEDs. The bad news is, there is so little brightness difference between running lights and brake lights on the 1157 bulbs that it's not feasible to use them like double filament bulbs The 1156 bulbs are only available in white, and they make the rear turn signals look pinkish, so it's a no-go there as well I did also get the resistors for the turn signals becuse the LEDs make them blink fast, but I didn't bother trying to install as I didn't like the white LEDs as blinkers anyway. Plus, one of the mounting bumps snapped off of one of the 1157s, so it can't be used. maybe they'll take it back... :sigh: |

Offline | LED Tail Lights 2 comments. While working on my Tail lights, I found that with a very Light load (like led lights) the MINI S thinks the bulb is burned out so it flashes rapidly to advise the driver. I saw on one web site where they sell a resistor to wire in paralell with the bulb to fix this problem. I did the "fog light to brake light mod" but did not want to double the load on the switching transistors for the brake lights, so I used led bulbs. Viewed from directly behind the car they are as bright as the regular lights. They do not fill the reflector well, and as you move off on an angle to the side, or up and down, the brightness drops off noticably. I would not use them as my only tail lights, but as they are extras I am retaining them. (I think these bulbs were direct facing only.) I bought a set of bulbs with the side and rear led's that I use on my trailer and they are some what better, but still not as bright as a real bulb when viewed from an angle. John |

Offline | We recently put a pair of stop/tail leds on our classic Mini, which has clear lenses fitted. The problem with regular bulbs was that the red burnt off and they went pale. Very impressed with them so far - no problems with visibility or difference between stop and tail brightness. Passed MOT with no problems, and I doubt that the average copper is going to know that they are illegal, that is if he even realises that they are leds. MCS JCW CR/CR ; MOD LY/B |

| i'm the dude! | i got ahold of another set of tail lights. I wanted to see what they'd be like if they were completely LED. Its still a work in progress but here are a few pics from a few days ago. For each taillight cluster there will be approximately 110 LEDs. |
