white roof black checks OR black roof white checks?

Any pros or cons for going with either option ?

Aside from the matching colour mirrors is there any other reason to favour one or the other ?

None really, apart from if you want to change your roof graphic a white roof as a base is easier to put another deign on...for instance a union jack...

Also white bonnet stripes will match your roof...

I do roof graphics here in OZ, and when the dealer gets a black roof in, bonnet stripes look a bit strange...

another question, the official bmw roof checks leave a gap round the edge, (see pic below)
why? I've seen checks that stretch right to the edge !?

I'm leaning towards this roof decal kit, in black to go on a white roof,
as I like their bonnet stripes. (Wouldn't have the rear or side though)
more info minisport.co.uk

looks nice, one word of advice, Check with your dealer non BMW approved decals invalidate paint warranty, but for an individual look that might not bother u.

How typical, no wonder the "sales contact" said to tell her what I was after.
I expect the "approved" vinyl uses a special (read expensive) adhesive.

So...if the roof kit costs a bit more to install because of using the correct film. Does that mean that when it comes to changing it, the cost of the respray isn't included in the original sum.

Pay a bit more...it won't be as much as respraying your roof.

Not really a fan of checks, but this picture you posted looks marvellous. I think body coloured checks really suit the car!

I'm questioning the truth behind any difference in the vinyl / adhesive.
Paying for quality merchandise I have no problem with.
Paying for dealer tall tale markup I do.

Owned an Elise a few years back, set up a little site for owners to share info etc.
Found a company manufacturing billet aluminium window winders,
actually billed as for classic minis, but that's what was in the Elise.
They were selling for around £20 inc p&p.
Lotus struck a deal with them and the dealers were soon selling them for £80 + fitting !!!

There is a vast difference it appears in fitting costs my advice is ring round other bmw dealers in your area. I have seen in other threads people have them fitted for less than £250.

I personally think there is something in the glues and materials. Its like any product there is cheaper stuff and more expensive stuff,

I probably got stitched up by the dealer, but at least they gave me nice explanation. Its been extensively tested, he admits others are probably good quality, but at least you have a definite guareente. sales tactic i know, but his final comment was how can we guareente something that hasn't been tested

I make less profit from 3M than other materials, as it is about 20% more to buy.

If you don't believe me about the materials and ashesives, just visit the 3M website, and view the hundreds of product data sheets.

Dealers mark up prices, as the actual profit in vehicles is so small. All the money is in aftercare products, such as stripes, extended warranties, floor mats etc.

Ask any vinyl company why they use 3M, and the reply will alsways be quality and backup. Reas into the 3M MCS warranty, and then ask yourself why no other vinyl manufacturer in the world offers any kind of warranty with their films...

I do believe you, it's the dealer sales banter I'm not happy with.

That however I don't believe, there isn't as little profit as they'd want us to believe.
Why else would they be giving you 5 years service for £150 !?[/quote]
